732383 2008-12-25 23:58:00 You might as well wait 3 months and then do everything or most things at the same time otherwise you're going to end up with a host of incompatible hardware or things that don't perform as well as you want. beeswax34 (63)
732384 2008-12-26 03:26:00 But, Speedy Gonzales, you say Pentium IV won't fit on those motherboards.

Why not?

Aren't there other options (I want to go the Intel-only route)?

478 pin and 775 pin are Intel CPU's/mobos, but theyre not interchangeable.

You cant use 478 pin CPU's on a 775 pin mobo or vice-versa

Because they wont fit

732385 2008-12-26 07:57:00 Go for an AMD rig with your budget.

Athlon X2 5200+ cpu ($110)
Asus M2N-MX SE mobo ($80)
Adata 2gb DDR2-800 ram ($45)
Radeon 4670/ Geforce 9600gt ($170)
WD 500GB SATA2 hard drive ($105)

I think your case only takes low profile cards so that might be a bit of a problem.

The L1 / L2 cache are only 128 kb / 512 kb, which seems low to me. Would this affect performance?

732387 2008-12-26 19:11:00 I'm going to do this in stages:

1) Motherboard, PSU, Graphics Card

2) RAM, screen

You can't. When you change a motherboard that old its MB, RAM, CPU in one go.

And once you add a graphics card, PSU at the same time.

Its pointless. Sell it and start over.

732388 2008-12-26 20:51:00 You could use that $700 to buy a new pc off trade me. Something like this (www.trademe.co.nz) would do, and you would still have change :clap. But you would have to buy a OS and install it. You can buy a windows vista upgrade off trade me (www.trademe.co.nz) and follow this (www.winsupersite.com) guide to do a clean install with it. davidmmac (4619)

The X2 5200 comes with 2MB L2 cache (1MB for each core). It's a very decent cpu for the price you would pay for it.

But yeah like pctek said, it's kinda pointless. Some sellers on trademe (check out tbt2 (www.trademe.co.nz) and xtremesystems (www.trademe.co.nz)) already seem to be selling their systems at wholesale prices.

732390 2009-01-14 00:24:00 For high-level gaming, what kind of power supply do I need? I'm looking at a Corsair VX 550W - is this sufficient (I had a look at the specs on your system qazwsxokmijn)?

And is this motherboard sufficient for high-level gaming, and future-safe (will last at least 3 years): pconlineshop.co.nz

It's a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-DS3R Intel P45 DDR3 ATX mobo,
with support for a very large range of CPUs (www.gigabyte.com.tw),
4 DDR3 RAM sockets (up to 1600Mhz),
1 PCI-e x16 slot running at x16,
1 PCI-e x16 slot running at x8 (support CrossFireX),
3 PCI-e x1 slots,

2 PCI slots,
6 SATA 3gb/s connectors (support for SATA RAID 0, 1 and 5),
1 IDE connector supporting up to 2 devices (my HDD and DVD-burner),
1 Floppy disk drive connector supporting up to 1 drive (I do have one, but I don't expect to EVER use it!),

Up to 3 IEEE 1394a ports (yes, I do need FireWire),
Up to 12 USB ports (eight on back and 4 'via the USB brackets connected to the internal USB headers" - what does this mean?)
(My case only has holes for four USB ports - do motherboards come with backplates for the area?)

I won't list the I/O connectors, they are on the page (www.gigabyte.com.tw)

2 RJ-45 connectors,
6 x audio jacks (Center/Subwoofer Speaker Out/Rear Speaker Out/Side Speaker Out/Line In/Line Out/Microphone) ,

BIOS stuff I don't understand:
1. 2 x 8 Mbit flash
2. Use of licensed AWARD BIOS
3. Support for DualBIOS™
4. PnP 1.0a, DMI 2.0, SM BIOS 2.4, ACPI 1.0b

So, sorry for the list :(, is this a good mobo?

732391 2009-01-14 00:27:00 Sorry, I missed the second page () - as I mentioned before, this was a Christmas present, and selling up is NOT going to gain me any favours.

I have done a bit of research (see above post), and have found some components.

Is the combination any good?

blah, blah, blah.....

Lol you only needed to C&P the name of the mobo and we would have given you a thumbs up. Gigabyte mobos are excellent, so are Asus.

Yeah, 550W is enough for our sort of gaming system. Though if I had more money I would have gone for something along the line of 600W. The good thing about my PSU is that though it's only 550W, it has 3x +12v rails at 18A each, giving a max load of 504W on the +12v rail. On a review it sustained a load over 600W, so it does work beyond its stated capability.
