529251 2007-03-02 03:12:00 When is a good time to prune trees? I know in a few months when trees start losing their leaves and flowers it creates mass covering on my front lawn. Is it best to do it in spring?
Or should I do it in the cooler climate of Autumn?

Rob, it's best to prune most trees when they are at their least active, i.e. autumn/winter, when they've lost there leaves. You're mileage may very depending on where you are/weather conditions and the type of tree. Though whacking trees down can be done at any time of year

Joe, I'm within 10 minutes of sea or river fishing (trout), a bit further for a decent lake though.

Apart from the puddle, that land looks pretty dry for spring time, is that because there is snow cover in the winter?

529252 2007-03-02 03:31:00 Yes, Murray's got it - with "dormant."
So Winter is best here.

If you prune too early, fragile new shoots appear just in time to be clobbered by Jack Frost.

(Not applicable to you "winterless north" gardeners, of course)

Though Spring-flowering non-fruiting varieties can be cut back after flowering, if you prefer.

529253 2007-03-02 04:04:00 I just have to ask... even though I'm scared of what the answer may be- What is a 'no body contact' lake? :stare:

It means that no humans may touch the water for any reason..it is going to San Diego as drinking water and even though the migratory fowl poop and urite(*) in the water, humans are so much more dirty.

* note: Urite does not Google for some reason...but it is the white stuff on top of bird poop....ask me how I know...go ahead!

Hi Laura
I think, from memory, they say that the rail-trip from Ch.Ch to Greymouth is best in late autumn because the leaves have fallen off the trees and you can see beyond. Is that right ? Must do the trip sometime in the next ten years (while am relatively certain of being ambulatory). One of life's modest goals !!!

529255 2007-03-02 04:20:00 Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate!

I am so jealous!

You dry-flying in that?

All those trees around the edge must be challenging . . . . good lies though .

What do you use to catch Bass??? We have normal fish over here!

Cast and retrieve lures . . . flys are for when I get really old . . hahaha

Bass pix here ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/1ST_BASS_THE_DAY . jpg" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) this is one of the decent ones in a very high altitude lake where they don't get big but they fight like crazy . Season for them to grow in really cold water is very short so they never get big . Bass typically come from semi-tropical waters in Louisiana and Oklahoma and Texas and places like that . . . this green bass is a Florida Large Mouth .

Anyway, bass respond to a lot of different things . . . spinner baits, Zara Spooks ( . toledo-town . net/fishing/enlarge . asp?pic=images/X9255" target="_blank">www . toledo-town . net), top poppers, do-nothin's, plastic worms, Rattle Traps ( . rat-l-trap . com/) . . . aggressive as a pit bull . . they are very territorial and bite almost anything that is no more than 2/3rds" target="_blank">www . rat-l-trap . com/) . . . aggressive as a pit bull . . they are very territorial and bite almost anything that is no more than 2 their size . If it fits head first into their mouths, they keep it . (Not good eating for me . . too fishy-tasting)

The thrill of bass fishing is getting that hook-up . . . and the resulting fight . They dive, charge and run like crazy . . . sometimes right at you . I have had them jump over a boat I was on once and spitting out the lure while doing it too .

If you surface pop or have something that floats like a popping frog or jitterbug, they take it like a bear claw coming out of the water and sweeping it under with them . The knees get shaking from that action!

Bass WILL NOT rfespond to most food-type baits . Sometimes a real worm that is on the bottom and still wiggling will work . . . but bass are too smart for peanut butter or liver or fish parts .

I don't use food-type baits . . . just artificial lures and such .

529256 2007-03-02 04:29:00 Nice photos SJ
I have a couple of very good photos to upload to "New Zealanders to See" but cannot logon for some reason . Was pretty sure that I had the password okay but it was rejected .

Then I tried the first option for resetting which was for them to email me however even though I asked for it a couple of times it has not arrived . That may be because I am not using a hotmail account, but instead Fred_Dagg@xtra . co . nz .

Then tried the second option where I was able to access my MSN account after proving I was not a robot and answering the secret question . I reset the password very carefully then re-entered and was told that I had successfully changed the password . However going back to logon it was not accepted . I seem therefore to be persona non grata !

I had similar problems today with iTunes as was buying a couple of Tom Waits songs --- however solved that by rebooting my PC, then all was well . However that did not fix the MSN scenario . I remember having all kinds of problems to join the group and MSN in the first place .

Hate to say this, SJ, but I wish you had used something more user friendly like Skype !!!!!
Misty :(

MSN webpages are all messed up this week . . forgot to say . . . did I ever send you an invite to join?

I think I did . . let me go do it again and then you'll have less troubles . . . . watch for the mail .

Just got the message as follows when I tried to sign on:

Good gosh, no . . there is never any snow there that is measurable!

A little dust, maybe . . but nothing that sticks .

That area was high desert long ago before California got so water hungry . The lake is artificial . . . well, maybe it was a large puddle once, but then expanded upon . Lake Skinner site here ( . temeculacvb . com/play/lake_skinner . asp?obj=sub12&tbl=tblMenu12&img=img12&td=td12" target="_blank">www . temeculacvb . com) and here . (Might need IE though)

The altitude is almost 2000 feet, and it is typically green and very weeded over in Spring and early Summer . I see temps at 110F in the hottest part of the year, and cold as low as just below freezing rarely .

It is coming out of the Winter but it hasn't been a typical climatic year for the past 500 years or so . The locals all say: "Wait till next year, this one ain't typical" . . . . yeah, sure!

What's typical is variety . . there is no NORMAL year at all!

If you want to be sick, I shouldda shown you all the new construction going in all around the lake . . . it's a shame . Huge 12 bedroom homes with 6 car garages and some have a neighbor heliport . We got yuppies and DINKs here .

DINKs = "Dual-incomes, no-kids" couples . :stare:

529258 2007-03-02 05:10:00 Nice wee building on the 2nd page Joe, very Oamaru(ish), similar stone (google it).

So, it's desert by reputation, that and perhaps a lack of genuine topsoil probably explains the dry look to the land. Slightly Otagoish in appearance, if you don't look too hard. The too have frenetic development going on near their lakes.

529259 2007-03-02 05:30:00 That's an outhouse . . . a toilet . . a loo (sp?)

But just down the road 1/4 mile is some of the finest grape-growing soil in the world .

They make some of the finest wines for local and export .

The soil must be pretty good . . or correct anyway for that!

News Flash . . . we just got hit by an earthquake . . . . . located in San Francisco . . but we got some of it here .
