528547 2007-03-02 00:40:00 lol, i was trying to do more-or-less the same thing, ubuntu fileserver on a windows network. i read all this crap about samba and how to install it, found out it was already installed but had no way to get it to actually run :( the whole thing DID work for about 3 seconds but that was it.

RTFM is how you get it working.

The main issue with networking with windows is windows, it doesn't claim.

i did read the manual/help files on ubuntu, and then googled it.

all i could decern is that there is more fedora support than ubuntu

not that it couldn't be my fault, but windows is easier for me

I read an occasional manual . . even color in some of the pictures, but I'll be bent over if I can understand them well enough to have a conversation with someone about anything I have learned so far .

If I get enough scotch in me . . . I might qualify for the lecture circuit for Ubuntu or Mepis or anything actually Linux .

I bet I could write a book about any of them by now . . . but I still don't think I understand enough to help myself .

I read'z, I do's and I messes up . It is starting to work . . . . but I think I broke the logic thread about four months ago . :groan:

Maybe I should try eating the manual covers and pages for the osmotic learning effect .

Ubuntu, try an easy one like Mepis. Fire up the Live CD and see how you get on.

Windows is, in many respects, easier. It just doesn't work at all when it comes to networking with other than Windows.

But overall if you're looking for a viable network, nix will network, do it correctly and stay networked. Ya just need to hold ya tongue right and say the right words.

528553 2007-03-02 21:15:00 Try taking a very close look at /etc/samba/smb.conf.

If you don't like editing config files directly, install the 'swat' package (Samba Web Administration Tool). Then point your browser at http://ip.address.of.server:901/ and do the admin from there - it's a complete web-based GUI for samba config. If you have somehow managed to screw up your config file, it'll even generate a new one for you.

Changes are normally applied automatically after a minute, but if you just can't wait then manually restart the samba daemon to reload the config.

[edit: Just in case you are one of these webmin types, try to avoid using it for samba stuff. It kinda works, but has a few serious bugs in that area.]
