2007-03-09 22:32:00 | Just call noise control, Ive had it called on me plenty of times in the past and I always complied, and they never tell you which neigbour rang them any way. Also I never held a grudge against whoever called them, as most times I didn't realise how loud it was. I even had noise control turn up during the day at about 3pm when I had my stereo up while I was building my fence. which I thought was really bizzare.

2007-03-10 01:52:00 | sure it makes sense in one way to ask them to turn it down BUT.......I doubt they'll give a stuff after all they MUST be well aware that the noise is gonna get way past their walls and into the neighbours ears and they obviously dont give a damn so you are unlikely to get any kind of positive response.......the other thing is that if you go over and ask them to turn it down then they dont, or as often happens they do for just a little while then it goes up again .....and then you ring noise control the bad neighbours are surely gonna figure out whos' the 'nark' very quickly indeed and that could turn nasty.......better in some ways to simply ring noise control anyway that way the noisy buggers wont have a clue which neighbour has complained and you wont get targeted..... good point, if they're ******s/unreasonable then asking them might be a bad idea... i know when neighbours actually came and asked me to keep my noise down i agreed, and as such i don't ride on public holidays, no earlier than 10am and no later than 5pm with a break for lunch, and if someone is having guests over all they have to do is call. it's the one caller who wouldn't even say where he was that pissed me off. everyone else came by and talked to me, and we sorted it out. point being if they're reasonable and you both act sensibly about this it'll be fine (like me they may not realise how far the noise carries), but if they simply won't act like adults then good luck... changing your habits may be a solution why study so late anyway? can't you do it during the day at all?

2007-03-10 04:37:00 | It is not a good idea to change your position from victim to aggressor. Calling the power company "as them" and trying to get their power cut off could get you into court as the defendant. | Graham L (2) | |

Calling the power company "as them" and trying to get their power cut off could get you into court as the defendant. And power companies aren't stupid. They need foolproof identification before acting on cut-off requests by phone. (Ever tried it? Do you know their unique identifier no? Full name of a/c payer? Date of birth?) Have you never seen these neighbours, Ninjabear - to get some idea of whether they're friendly or unfriendly? Most people would think it's reasonable not to disturb others, and they may not realise how far their sound travels. I live among students, whose music blares across my backyard when I'm enjoying outdoor sunshine (And yes, that "heavy bass" is the killer), but I'm sure it never ocurrs to them that there's an extra audience. I'd ask nicely first, explaining about the study & trying for a compromise - before resorting to officialdom. |

2007-03-10 21:23:00 | Folks can be funny with noise. I have had several problems with noisy stereos over the last 50 or so years but have never had to resort to noise control officers. One in a campsite in Taupo was odd. A young man had set up a van with open back doors and a VERY noisy stereo sticking out the back. He was playing loud rock. I asked him to please stop. He was amazed and thought everybody was enjoying his entertainment! Nobody was. He stopped. A neighbour had us on edge for months with her thump thump thump bass sounds. Then one night I had to drill a hole in a concrete wall - just one 6mm hole and as you know if drilling concrete you go through it VERY fast or you get a polished surface the drill will not touch. I must have been at it for all of 10 seconds when she had left her bedroom shot downstairs across the garden and was abusing me for disturbing her. Actually she is a pleasant women I like. But that day was an off day for her! Tom
