732094 2008-12-23 22:40:00 1) Do you think I should enable UAC or disable UAC?

2) After installing SP1, my computer has gone way slower than I usually was. Should I remove SP1? Con you give me any advice how to speed it up?

Thanks

732095 2008-12-23 22:55:00 disable it if you want,

you shouldn't IMO.

in what ways is it running slower?

732096 2008-12-23 22:59:00 Yes - disable UAC. It's the one thing that kills Vista. Apart from UAC I think Vista is great!

How is it slower - what spec is your PC? DON'T uninstall SP1 - you'll make your machine much less secure :)

732097 2008-12-23 23:04:00 UAC - your choice.

Slow machine won't be a SP1 problem. Slow machines are usually fixed by stopping unnecessary startups. Every machine I see can usually have 8-12 startup programs stopped.

msconfig and Windows Defender will show startups but I usually use this one www.mlin.net

732098 2008-12-23 23:20:00 I have Vista and SP1 and it runs fine. Seems to me that avoiding UAC is just like trying to turn Vista into XP, you may as well get used to Vista and get over it. For security set up at least one user and use that for day to day browsing etc, don't use the admin login.
Yes UAC is more complicated and a pain because some freeware will not run correctly on Vista even when supposed to, probably due to the different versions of Vista

732099 2008-12-23 23:49:00 just wait for W7 where you can adjust the sensitivity of UAC. GameJunkie (72)
732100 2008-12-24 00:18:00 I disable startups with Ccleaner gary67 (56)
732101 2008-12-24 00:25:00 You may as well turn off UAC - some say its dangerous but from experience (and I see MANY PC's) every week - UAC does very little in stopping infections - it will stop legit / Safe programs and ask for permission, but fails to stop malware programs & Viruses - I see infected PC's with user account still on and most people simply say YES any way - not knowing what they are agreeing to.

Regarding the Slowness - how long has it been slow after installing SP1 - it could be doing background updates - run windows update manually and see if it brings anything through.
