731916 2008-12-23 01:38:00 When I click on the internet icon on my desktop internet (ie7) page tries to open and hangs there indefinitely . Can you help please?

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 running XP Pro .

It was going well until some a message came up that a virus has been detected by Avast while I was on internet, I chose the "Delete" option and carried on sufring but when I close the laptop off and restarted I tried the internet and that's when I realised what had happenned - no internet .

The Outlook Express is still working fione and receiving and sending messages .
It tried entering different addesses on the address bar but internet still hangs, it won't open or go to my home page .

I tried to go back using system restore but after the laptop was rebooted the message came up that it cannot be restored to the chosed date . I tried choosing two more different dates but the same message came up .

Thanks for your help .

731917 2008-12-23 01:39:00 Post a HijackThis (www.trendsecure.com) log. Sounds like the virus has either messed something up, or hasn't been removed fully. wratterus (105)
731918 2008-12-23 04:15:00 you could just change to firefox. twentynine (14421)
731919 2008-12-23 05:03:00 you could just change to firefox.

Doesn't help the original poster to diagnose and fix their problem though which is what they want to do.

731921 2008-12-23 09:26:00 Try this - click start/ run , in the box type in sfc /scannow < Press enter> system file checker will scan and replace any missing or damaged files, once its finished, reboot and try the Internet again.

Also try this from MS's site:
If you have Internet Explorer 7, you can repair damaged files or missing registration information in Internet Explorer 7. To do this, follow these steps:

Start Internet Explorer 7.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm

If you cant open IE7 Normally do the above from Start / control Panel / Internet options ----

731922 2008-12-23 11:00:00 The Outlook Express is still working fine and receiving and sending messages.
Seeing as your internet is still connected, go to your File menu in IE7 (if menus arent showing, right-click in an empty area of the tab area and select Menu Bar), and check if Work Offline is checked, uncheck it if it is.

Also it would be a good idea to remove your street address from your post heading. You dont really want to tell the whole world where you live (and keep valuable equipment (computer etc)), hmm?
