731886 2008-12-23 01:18:00 I helped a friend install Nero but it did not find the DVD-CD writer.

The Gigabyte DVD unit does burn CD's (with Windows' built in burner) and it can read a Verbatim DVD (the type we are trying to burn). The only option Nero gave was to make an ISO file.

BTW, this is the pc (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) that my friend has. It is the slooooooowest computer I have used, painfully slow. It presently has 256 Mb RAM, DDR333, and today I got him to order 1 Gb of DDR400 (will discard the 256 stick). 2.8 GHz Celeron, WinXP.

Back to Nero and the DVD-CD writer: What to do?

Thanks.

731887 2008-12-23 01:22:00 Did this version of Nero come with this burner??

If it did it should detect it.

However, if you're using the same / original version of Nero with another burner (if its not the burner that came with this version of Nero), it wont find it.

Since the original version of Nero is tied to the original burner

731888 2008-12-23 01:35:00 No, its a different version of Nero, but the Nero we installed was the full version, Nero Burning Premium v 7.0.14, and I know others who have downloaded a demo version of Nero and it worked OK (they chose to buy it - not sure if it could burn in the demo mode). 731889 2008-12-23 01:42:00 Umm since its slow did anyone check the jumper on it, (jumper it properly), to make sure its not on the same setting (if another IDE device / hdd / cd is on the same IDE connection)??

Its not in PIO mode is it (which will cause it to go real slow)

Hmm, you should be able to burn if its a demo (during the trial period).

Or whats the point in making a demo (if it didnt work)

What jumper do you mean? On the hd?

Nero is not a demo verson. Maybe we need to update the DVD writer's drivers - is this called a 'firmware update'?

731891 2008-12-24 00:55:00 Yup firmware, firmware isnt the same as the drivers. (firmware is like a bios update, it flashes it) Drivers dont flash anything.

Theyre different

The jumper, to jumper it as slave or master. If its IDE

Still do not understand - do you mean a jumper on the DVD unit itself, or something on the mobo, or a BIOS setting?

BTW, I now suspect that his Gigabyte unit is a DVD-read and not a DVD writer. He says that after rebooting the pc, Nero now can burn CDs but cannot burn DVDs. I'll get him to Google the model number.

731893 2008-12-24 21:13:00 Yup the jumper to jumper it as a Master/slave or Cable select

Thats the jumper I'm talking about.

If there's another IDE device on the same connection as this thing, (and theyre both jumpered to slave / whatever), theyre going to conflict

Sounds like it only read dvds not burn to them

731894 2008-12-24 21:15:00 I think Speedy means a jumper on the Dvd/cd drive to change from master to slave or cable select, but sounds like you might be on the right track and possibly it is only a DVD rom gary67 (56)
