733105 2008-12-28 21:07:00 Just wondered what you think about this? www.nzherald.co.nz
When I started to read it, I thought was a good idea,:clap but towards the end changed my mind. I believe that "content filtering" should be on ones own computer. However I don't know how to do in on Firefox. Can anyone advise, on this? Thanks, Ian.

733109 2009-01-03 09:26:00 Ive been following this from theregister.co.uk
I remember an article stating that the linux boxes doing the filtering would be great hacking targets - possible Man in the middle attack on 19million australian net users!

Well meaning but wont actually work, unaccountable, and a secret list. What about IRC? p2p? Too many ways to get around it anyway. Just like DVD CSS.

733111 2009-01-03 09:40:00 From that article -
mostly child pornography, excessive violence, instructions in crime or drug use and advocacy of terrorism.
Telstra here in NZ have been doing it for a few months already with some porn sites - got an email about it in July this year.

Part of the email --
We have decided to filter access to all known child sex abuse sites.
This decision is based on the abhorrent nature of the content of these sites and our desire to create a safe online environment for our customers and their families.

There are approximately 7000 known child sex abuse sites in the world. Many of them change their online address every couple of days. As a result, the list of sites is refreshed daily

Never seen the message they are meant to have - so cant say if its working or not ??

Ofcourse it will fail, but the appearance of safety is what people are trying to sell.

This ends up being a libertarian vs socialist argument. Get the state to protect you.

If it becomes politically powerful to attempt it,it will happen. How will it become powerful? Through certain people selling misguided fear.

Its like playing whack o mole.
Sometimes the challenge of a hacking arms race increases the number of hackers I think.

733114 2009-01-04 04:53:00 Pointless IMO! Absolutely pointless...

Firstly it should be blocked at the home of / work level.

Second, it's far too easy to get around with darknets, proxying etc..

Lastly, that material is generally "traded" on IRC, or searched for on P2P networks, which isn't blocked by these filters... Making it pointless! Waste of money!!

Spend the $$ tracking down the bastards who make the kiddy pr0n I say!!
