732511 2008-12-25 23:39:00 Since Old Faithful died I have extracted the three data disks (D, E & F) from the remains and now want to transfer their stored files to my Seagate 320GB USB backup drive. The OS was on a separate dedicated drive that also had all the programs on it, but no data, and I think that disk is dead.

The main data drive (D) was in a removable cassette, and still is, while my present computer has its data drive in the same type of cassette so I could just swap the drives over, and once copied, fit the other two drives into the cassette one at a time to copy them too. However, I'm not sure if this will upset my computer at all by inserting a drive that it hasn't seen before and I don't want to lose access to the original data drive as that holds all my current data files.

Will this cause any problems? If it could, I also have a separate DSE USB enclosure with a 20GB drive in it so I could always install the old drives in that to transfer their data, but the removable cassette is much easier to use.

This is unknown territory for me so your advice and/or recommendations would be appreciated.

Cheers

732512 2008-12-26 01:11:00 If the disk your removing is just a data storage disk as well I can't see any problems arising gary67 (56)
732513 2008-12-26 08:57:00 Yes, they are all just data disks.

Any other opinions before I try it tomorrow afternoon?

732514 2008-12-26 10:09:00 from what i understand is ur computer died and you removed ur harddrives from it, and now want to back them up into ur external harddrive? if so u can just hook them up to ur new computer and and use them with it or at least thats been my experience but you could just hook up one at a time and back them up into ur external hdd. deathracer (11825)
732515 2008-12-26 10:22:00 So long as the contents are only data you should have no problems.
Are they copied as images or as files?

If imaging software was used then you will need to install the software to do a restore.

You may also need to take ownership of certain folders.
