It would be funded by Government or private investors and be operated on a cost plus 10% method and would be open to all ISPs to use. I think its a great idea ! It would get Telecom investing in their network tomorrow ! Regards Digby |

If the Govt steps in to provide links regardless of the likely payback why would the Telco's or private investors risk their money? | PaulD (232) | ||

Regards Digby I'm perfectly happy with the broadband connection I pay for and it's only a great idea as long as the people who use it are the ones who pay for it. Same goes to the Wellington City Council who come up with ideas to spend money on new projects faster than they can increase the rates to pay for them. Otherwise cool - get your wallets out and good luck making that profit on that fibre network to East Cape, Kaitaia, Haast and anywhere else you might want it to go. |

We definitely need better telecommunications networks in NZ but who's going to foot the bill? Running such a network to all of the outlying towns would be positively stupid - after a certain distance and with lower traffic you need to consider alternatives such as wireless networks. A government-owned fibreoptic backbone running the length of New Zealand could be a good (but extremely expensive and long term) move as ISPs could compete to build networks using the full range of technologies nation-wide, including wireless options. Trying to run government-owned fibre to every town would, however, be completely impractical. |
