530686 2007-03-07 09:30:00 Thats if apple stays in desktop and laptop computers in the future. They have now renamed themselves just 'apple' instead of apple computers. They now believe it is better to sell a lot of lower priced items, such as ipods, rather than a fewer high priced items, such as computers.

They may be selling "fewer" computers per quarter than many PC manufatcures, however their margin over all products including iPods is around 29% where as the industry average is around 10%.

530687 2007-03-08 08:56:00 Companies do need a constant stream of revenue to remain profitable, however they need to be able to have a profit margin from the revenue - just ask Micheal Dell about his. ;)

O RLY?

Weird, what the hell are you all getting silly about?

MS has always aimed for a 3 year gap between releases, MS have always used the prior release as the base for the next one, You can trace whatever OS your on right now back though each incarnation to its beginning, The next release will be an expansion of the current one, This is the MS gameplan, This is the same MS gameplan that MS have used for 20 years, You do not have to upgrade everytime MS repackage and relaunch there line of products.

The delay between Xp and Vista was the exception to the gameplan, Not the projected short gap between Vista and the next OS.

i read that vienna is a complete fresh start, to try and get rid of all the old resource hogging, storage space eating, security risking relics from as far back as win95

for mac relying on ipods alone would be a dangerous (if not stupid) move, more of the people i know are going for the cheaper, better, non-itunes/zune options from creative and the like. what happened to 8-track (whatever they were called) players?

530690 2007-03-08 09:15:00 With reference to Dell's little cash flow problem...

From BusinessWeekOnline
Dell's Doubtful Turnaround
Amid ongoing investigations, management changes, and a rare decline in sales, the computer maker remains mum on its strategies for the future

Dismal Fourth-Quarter Results

For the current fiscal first quarter, Wall Street analysts are projecting Dell will post revenue of $14.28 billion, an increase of about 1% from the prior year. The company, which doesn't provide specific financial guidance, wouldn't elaborate on its press release and for the second consecutive quarter didn't hold a conference call to discuss results with analysts. In after-hours trading, Dell shares fell 2.17%, to $22.51.

The Round Rock (Tex.) company says net income came in at $673 million, or 30 cents a share, for the fiscal fourth quarter ended Feb. 2. That result is down 33% from a year ago, when Dell reported a profit of $1 billion, or 43 cents a share. The most recent results include a charge of $89 million related to the ongoing investigations and a gain of $184 million related to reducing employee bonuses. And in its first revenue decline in five years, Dell says sales fell 5%, to $14.4 billion, in the quarter. (The prior decline occurred in the period following September 11.)

Dell: Pulling Out the Pink Slips?
Efforts to streamline operations suggest a round of job cuts could be coming at the beleaguered PC maker

Nagging Costs, Declining Sales

Dell, however, is reorganizing in a manner that consolidates several company areas, suggesting that pink slips may not be too far behind. The Round Rock (Tex.) computer maker is combining previously separate manufacturing, supply chain, and procurement operations into a single organization reporting to one executive. Dell also is creating a worldwide consumer business and a worldwide computer-services business, a change from the past practice of dividing up those units by country. Also, product design and development were parts of a separate unit reporting to the CEO; now they're to be folded into Dell's new worldwide consumer group (see BusinessWeek.com, 2/12/07, "Is Dell Too Big for Michael Dell?").

Given Dell's troubles, it's unlikely the company will be able to redeploy workers it finds in redundant positions. In the preliminary results for the most recent fourth quarter ended Feb. 2, operating expenses, which include salaries, crept up to 11.6% of sales, from 9.6% a year ago. Making matters worse, Dell's sales fell 5% from a year ago, to $14.4 billion.

I don't think Apple are relying on iPods alone to keep the company going although they have sold around 90million units to date and I would have to say that who ever is in second place is a looong way back.

Apple's total revenue for the December quarter (with 5% market share) was over $20 Billion US (can't remember the exact figure) with just over $1 Billion profit - compare that to Dells figures which are listed above.

530692 2007-03-08 09:19:00 Windows Vienna
Windows "Vienna" (formerly known as Blackcomb) is a codename for a future version of Microsoft Windows, originally announced in February 2000, but has since been subject to major delays and rescheduling. Microsoft now announced it will be released in 2009, and according to a magazine called "Smart Computing In Plain English", work on it was begun right after Windows Vista came out. As of February 2007, the name of the operating system used internally is undisclosed and is not used publicly by Microsoft,[1] though "Windows 7" has been noted in job postings as a working name for the project.[2]

Microsoft has refrained from discussing the details about "Vienna" publicly as they focus on the release and marketing of Windows Vista,[3] though some early details of various core operating system features have emerged at developer conferences such as Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in 2006.

530693 2007-03-08 09:19:00 Who the hell gives a flying fig about Dells finances?

Yes, wind 2000 is NT5, XP is NT6, Vista is NT7 . Vista was supposed to have a totally new file system, but this was canned when they knew that it would take a lot longer. Vienna or what ever they will call the next 'should' have the new file system if they can work out all the bugs.

Why Aren't You Upgrading to Vista?
tech.yahoo.com

Yes there appear to be more reasons not to upgrade, than reasons to upgrade. Ascent.co.nz have an interesting poll on their website, where over 60% of people have voted that they wouldn't touch vista with a barge poll.

Apart from the 'pretty' interface I can't only see negative reasons to upgrading. You can also always get XP skinned so that it appears almost identical to vistas interface.
