530676 2007-03-07 08:48:00 I think that is why I have seen comments referring to Vista as Windows ME (Mistake Edition) v2.
Microsoft is like a power utility company that needs a constant stream of revenue coming in to remain profitable on a couple of successful ideas that are starting to find a lot more competition than it had in the 90s from the likes of Google, Linux, OpenOffice, Apple and FireFox to name a few.
The only problem with having competition is that if you can't come up with newer and better ideas faster and more efficiently than everyone else, your competitors catch you and pass you and take your customers with them and reduce the profit you used to get from your trusted revenue streams.

Think about it.

Clunk?

MS are still the richest company in the world, and probally made more money in the last year then they did back in 95 when they had no compettion.

Oh wait, There was plenty of different OS's back in the day, and many more fully fledged office applications.

Clunk, Clunk, Clunk.

530678 2007-03-07 09:00:00 look, ok, so i didn't think that one through, i apologise, but they're still deliberately keeping quiet so they can continue to overcharge for vista, so they can make $billions off gullible consumers.... sound business practice actually, seeing as they have clearly gotten away with it many times before now

this also explains why they didn't spend all the resources spent on vista developing vienna instead; why sell once what you can sell twice

It is litrally going to cost me thousands of dollars to upgrade to Vista, as a lot of my hardware and software won't work with it. If I then have to replace a lot of it again in 2009, I would not be happy. Therefore I am sticking with xp and win 2000 while they contrinue to support it. I suspect a lot of business won't bother with a vista upgrade, as it isn't worth it. What additional things does Vista really offer to a business user? YOu can always install additonal software to xp to get some of the vista extras.

530679 2007-03-07 09:01:00 I wonder if MS will make a viagra edition you will need a Hard Drive a lot more that 1gb of ram to make it perform and a 6.3GHZ processor for fast smooth action to get the best out of it.
And also an intel Hard core quad duo for extremely fast and reliable performance.

530680 2007-03-07 09:07:00 Apparently they are going to slow down after Leopard has been released (April?) and go for an update every 2 years or so, not that there was anything wrong with Panther or Tiger.

Thats if apple stays in desktop and laptop computers in the future. They have now renamed themselves just 'apple' instead of apple computers. They now believe it is better to sell a lot of lower priced items, such as ipods, rather than a fewer high priced items, such as computers.

530681 2007-03-07 09:08:00 Weird, what the hell are you all getting silly about?

MS has always aimed for a 3 year gap between releases, MS have always used the prior release as the base for the next one, You can trace whatever OS your on right now back though each incarnation to its beginning, The next release will be an expansion of the current one, This is the MS gameplan, This is the same MS gameplan that MS have used for 20 years, You do not have to upgrade everytime MS repackage and relaunch there line of products.

The delay between Xp and Vista was the exception to the gameplan, Not the projected short gap between Vista and the next OS.

Windows Viagra has a certain ring to it.

Companies do need a constant stream of revenue to remain profitable, however they need to be able to have a profit margin from the revenue - just ask Micheal Dell about his. ;)

There were lots of different operating systems back in the late 80s however there was a better spread of those systems and hardware across the people who had them. In the 90's when Apple had lost its way and was loosing money and customers hand over fist and Microsoft was making about 80% profit margin on Windows and Office is a far cry from where we are today. Essentially MS Office was the only alternative for office software.
