733070 2008-12-29 09:41:00 Well - all I can say is that in my experience there has never been any problem in connecting an ADSL router/modem and a WAP together! johnd (85)
733071 2008-12-29 10:31:00 I'd rather use separate devices too, myself. Then maybe that's just me. But It's certainly not hard - I mean you still need to configure everything, doesn't change much if one set of pages is on one device and the rest on another. I reckon it would be better for upgrades as you could replace one device and not everything else.

Anyway, for simplest setup you could connect your desktop to the Router via USB, and then a WAP to the router via ethernet.

If you don't like using USB then just add a switch. Also good if you want to add more wired connections later.

733072 2009-01-06 06:58:00 Hi everyone and thanks for all of your input.

Sorry it has taken so long for me to review and summarise.

Here is where I am at:

I like the idea of one device, fewer cables around the desk and am considering either:

tinyurl.com

or

www.dynalink.co.nz or
www.dynalink.co.nz

I like the idea of futureproofing with n but for a premium of $100 over the dynalink products is it really worth the difference. When I get an n device the router price will have probably come down to that $100 price point.

Any thoughts on these products?

Rob99 I checked out the product www.dse.co.nz

Again there is an $80 premium?

Cheers

733073 2009-01-06 08:57:00 Dont bother with N-speed IMO.

It *sounds* nice having faster speeds etc, but for browsing the internet you wont notice it, its just surplus bandwidth. The vast majority of people will never outgrow a Wireless-G network as it is, and its heaps cheaper to chuck in a Repeater-Node to boost the Wireless signal than it is to get an N-Router & N-Client adapter.

Either of those two Linksys models will work a charm, but please please please stay away from D-Link ;)

Im with Agent_24, I prefer separate devices myself, but thats coz its more fun to tinker with :D If you can afford the little extra, go all-in-one with either of those two Linksys Routers and you'll be right as rain! Check pricespy.co.nz if you havent already :)

733076 2009-01-29 07:15:00 Hi again, just reporting back with the outcome of my Dynalink RTA1025W purchase.

I had a little trouble configuring the Dynalink RTA1025W but it was me being dumb nothing to do with the product. I walked away, left it for a day, booted up LinuxMint rather than Vista, started easy configure and that was it everything worked.

I had a few problems with the EEEPC netbook after trying to configure security but ended up going back to the defaults and started again and it all seems OK. I think I have setup security for the wireless network but don't really know. I will have to search for testing methods.

Thanks again to everybody who helped me with input and advice.
