530963 2007-03-08 23:53:00 Nearly there and I am wondering what I will do with my free time!

Money is not a problem, if I'm careful, but I may need to drop SKY TV.

I'm reasonably OK with computers and I have had a business background all my working life.

I would like to do something on computers but have no idea of programming but I can write reports and use Excel.

What I would like to know is, does anyone have any suggestions that I can fill in time with and possibly make a little on the side?

To retire is something most of us will end up doing and without planning and thinking about well before, suddenly it's there and you are left wondering. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

How about doing some volunteer work. There is always a need for this in the community, and it is satisfying. Give something back to the community, so at least you are doing something for the money you receive from tax payers.

530966 2007-03-09 07:39:00 It sounds like you are financially comfortable in retirement but don't have a lot to spare for emergencies. I have found the one thing that really trashes the budget is unexpected medical and dental expenses. Even if you have medical insurance (and I surely hope you do) you still need cash to tide you over until the refund comes. I strongly suggest you look for a little part time job and put the proceeds away for such emergencies and things like whiteware replacement and house repairs. tutaenui (1724)

You are a Pillock. His pension is the money he has paid into the system over the years. It was always supposed to be untouchable by Govt Treasury, but of course they used it for other things.. Think on, when you retire who will be paying YOUR pension??? PJ

Name calling isn't partically grown up. You elderly people are far too sensitive, and obvously don't like people who have different opinons to yourself. When I reach retirement the government have already hinted that their won't be a pension, and I have made my own arrangements to be self sufficient instead of relying on anyone. The tax money I am paying now isn't going towards my retirement is it?

I can tell you now that the government can do anything they want, and raising the age of retirement to 70 (before you can collect a government pension)isn't out of the question, and probably isn't such a bad idea with a huge bubble of baby boomers coming up to retirement age. Because health has improved and people are living way longer, having a huge percentage of old people collecting the pension, isn't going to be sustainable. The governemtn haven't got funds stashed away to pay pensions(part from the cullen fund) the pension is a paid out the of the taxes that are being paid now by tax payers. I am talking about the government pension, and not any private retirement fund that you may have invested in. Basically I am saying that people shouldn't be relying on the government pension, and the government have also said this too. People should be making their own retirement arrangements. Thats what those ads on TV have all been about, saving for your retirement.

I see too many people give up work, and then they just muck around at home, and some go into a state of depression as they don't have anything meaningful to do, and oldfartitous kicks in. I have also seen a lot of marriages break up, as the woman of the house aren't used to their husband being at home all the time.
Some of these people do eventually take on part time jobs, but it is such a huge waste of peoples talents for them just to be staying at home. Old people are a resource that the community should be taking advantage of. There are some groups that have realised this and are recruiting eldery to work for them in both community and commercial applications.

Personally I always have to be doing something, I would get bored very quickly just staying at home or playing golf all day. Sure it would be fine for a week, but I would find it more rewarding helping people in the community and doing someting different each day.

Elderly people and elderly care is going to become a real big issue in the next couple of decades, when the babyboomers reach retirement age and and then start requiring professional care. Who is going to pay and who are going to look after them, because there is already a major shortage of workers in rest homes, partly due to the low pay they receive. The eldely care sector is in a major need of a shake up.
