732676 2008-12-27 00:59:00 I'm trying to install software and for one particular item, I get an error 183 message and can't proceed.

Googling it, the recommendation is to use Reg Cure; trouble is it'll cost US $29.95 and I've no idea if it'll work, or even if the whole thing is dodgy?

Does anyone have any ideas what I might be up against and/or a solution?
Thanks

732677 2008-12-27 01:05:00 So whats the program youre trying to install? Speedy Gonzales (78)
732678 2008-12-27 01:16:00 Blue Next, Micro Bluetooth USB Adaptor, software.

I have bluetooth enabled and can pick up devices, but this software has a useful GUI on it for GPS.

732679 2008-12-27 01:51:00 Looks like that error can also happen, if you use Nlite and you removed the modem drivers.

You didnt do this did you?

Looks like Bluesoleil (a program can do this, as well)

So what does this error say besides error 183?

It probably means something similar to this from the Bluesoleil site

Q : What can I do when the installation stop at installing modems/com ports, and pop up 'error 183'?

A : The conceivable reason is that some of the installation files were damaged or the old driver was not uninstalled clearly. You could uninstall it clearly and then reinstall the newer version.
Propose solution to remove earlier version of BlueSoleil (version1.x) as follow: from the install packet, please find the program 'uninstall.exe', click and choose 'no' in the next window, then it will uninstall automatically

er, yes, I did:groan:
Was sure I'd have no need for modem.

Also the software is Blue Soleil. Blue Next is the brand name of the device.

Thanks Speedy. The other thing I've found out, is that, error 183 can be a whole lot of things, hard to pin it it down to a specific problem. But, my feeling is that you've hit the nail right on the head.
Please tell me I don't have to do a re-install to get the modem drivers back:lol:

BT drivers (may) install network drivers as well .

If its similar to the ASUS BT dongle here, (depending on what the drivers install / the program does), it can also give you the option to dial out from a mobile (where modem drivers come in)

Uh oh :p

LOL, I'm afraid to say, thats exactly what you have to do to fix it

One site said, the only way you maybe able to fix that error is do another SS cd, DONT remove the modem drivers,

And reinstall Windows.

732682 2008-12-27 05:24:00 Can you just download and install the modem drivers only? gary67 (56)
732683 2008-12-27 05:31:00 The modem stuff he deleted has probably got files / inf files in it.

For BT. For the dial-up side of it

732684 2008-12-27 22:40:00 I've re-nlited the XP install, and reinstalled; this time included modems.
Blue Soleil worked; everything's OK.

Took about 3hours from start to finish.

Thanks for your help Speedy:thumbs:
