| 530051 | 2007-03-04 21:36:00 | Amazingly, though admittedly a time-travel event given that the episode dated back several years to the first "star in an ordinary car" exploit, Top Gear has finally tested an ordinary car regularly seen on NZ roads . They reviewed the Mazda 6 (of Zoom Zoom fame) and amazingly again, they didn't damn or mock it, they actually praised it . I was staggered, given that Jeremy Clarkson regularly slates cars from premium manufacturers and invariably contradicts any positive opinion expressed by Hamster, and Hamster was very positive about the 6 . All of this was music to my ears because I recently replaced my weary and decrepit 1993 Mazda 626 SW with a three year old Mazda 6 SW and was well pleased with the overall fit, finish and behaviour on the road . I have always regarded Mazda as the poor man's Toyota: solid, reliable, economic to run and maintain, but without the price premium . After a succesful run with a series of 626s supplied as company cars, all of which were mercilessly flogged in best "it's company car and I don't pay for the petrol or repairs" fashion and never missed a beat, it was my first choice for a vehicle when I went into my own business, and despite its previous life as a photocopier company's lease vehicle, my dear departed 626 gave 10 more years of solid and reliable service as expected and was still going strong when I moved it on . I used my own experiences to guide my latest purchase and didn't need Top Gear's validation, but it was nice to hear a positive opinion about the vehicle from people who drive the world's best and worst . Top Gear being UK based, I guess we are never going to see many vehicles from our market, though they did review a performance Holden a while back and loved that too . Maybe we should ship them a Trekka as an example of NZ manufacture, or send them back an Austin Allegro or a Triumph Mayflower and see how they review "good British engineering" from days gone by? I looked at a 6 before I bought my 03 Maxima Ti, but settled on the Nissan because 1) I couldn't afford a BA XR6, and 2) I found the "fit and finish" of the Nissan much superior to the 6. The centre grey console in the 6 made a horrid noise when I tapped it, and it felt very cheap. Dynamically though, the 6 will probably be all over the Maxima, but my priority was open-road cruising, and the Maxima is superb. Especially with the cruise control doing it's thing, and my Stones CD's filling up the stacker! I tested a BA Fairmont (see a theme here?;) ) as well, it was terrible. Again, the fit and finish may be acceptable for some, but to me it was cheap and nasty. Just to show I'm not totally biased, I lowered my standards and jumped in a Commodore (03 VY). And didn't wanna get out again! :D Less said about that the better.... So yeah, Maxima for me. Boring as.....words I can't type here, but reliable and a great cruiser. Me missus don't like it though...:stare: |

And your point is....? An S-class Mercedes is a "far larger" car....with a "much bigger" engine. Segment-wise, the difference between a Maxima and Mazda 6 is negligible, as is most other things. |

Segment-wise, the difference between a Maxima and Mazda 6 is negligible, as is most other things. Its like comparing chalk and cheese in terms of the category of car (medium size vs Large size car). I am in the market for a mazda 6 size of car, but wouldn't even consider the maxima, as it is in another size class, as it is a massive bulky thing, with a huge gas guzzler. The maxima is similar is size class to the ford falcon, the holden commodore, while the m6 is in the size class of the vw passett or peugeot 407 which are far smaller in dimensions and engine size. |
