529816 2007-03-04 03:40:00 Since trademe was sold, NZ trading sites have popped up everywhere. Just wondering if there is a list of all of them? I have just come across a new one today, that looks to have been setup by the autotrader people http://www.sellmefree.co.nz , and they have a bigger client base than another one called zillion, which has been around for a while. I wonder how many of them are going to survive?
Personally I only use trademe, as it has far more selection, although the website is a bit old fashioned and clunky compared to others.

529817 2007-03-04 06:15:00 Try this -
:
Put "auction websites" into the forum thread Search.

Take special note of the post by chchinformer & follow the link to his Auction Eye.
It gives you the choice of searching several sites at once. Very handy.

(For ease of use, Zillion is streets ahead of TradeMe - but not nearly as many customers alas.)

529819 2007-03-04 07:54:00 TradeMe is synonymous with online trading in NZ. It would take alot, and I mean alot to push them off that mantle. I see alot of talk, and not much success. Tux (606)

I thought Zillion made have made some inroads, but they are still selling the same number of items that they were last year. They have some loyal people who use their services, but they are very much a small fry. I can't see how anyone can compete with trademe, apart from maybe telecom, if they went into online auctions. Telecom would probably be the only business that has the money, skills, client base, and adverting knowhow to setup a competing system. I wonder why Telecom don't turn Ferrit into an online auction system for both new and second hand products. Currently ferrit is a dead duck.

529821 2007-03-04 19:37:00 There were heaps of them before Trademe was sold too.

Its a pity because most are doomed.

Because TM has the largest market share people continue to use it because they are more likely to:
Sell their item (biggest number of potrntial buyers)
Find an item for sale (biggest number of listings)

Although I would like to support the NZ owned smaller trading sites, the reason I use trademe are the same as the above . Zillion is the only other one I have tried, but they just don't have enough of a selection . I am a little surprised ebay haven't really got into the NZ market, but there is definately an oppurtunity for telecom . Trademe also do very little in the way of adverting, it is mainly word of mouth .

What has Telecom marketed well ?

Aside from products that have a captive monopoly market in ?

Their Xtra site has been through 2 or 3 incarnations of others content !

They have the money, and they could buy the skills, but that does not make you a good marketer or entrepeneur . I say the less they do the better we all are .

I the orginal poster does not like TradeMe he should use and support some other site and spread the word so others may use it . And find good reasons to use another site . Eg is their range better, is their software better ? are their rates cheaper ?

I like trademe because it has the best selection, and I don't use othjer sites, however I am aware of the other sites . I don't care about rates, as I usually buy not sell, and the fee differences are very small . What I am really wondering, is why some of these smaller trading sites are bothering, I mean do they actually turn a profit, or are they hoping that a big company will buy their business and customers . I see a lot of consolidation in this market .
