733456 2008-12-29 20:31:00 Just had a major blow up with XP.
Windows refused to load. It would just post and then go to ERROR! Then it just rebooted every 30 seconds
I inserted the xp disk and even though removable disk had top priority I just got same performance..

One last try, before I took to it with a hammer! I booted and then hit F8. This brough up a boot preference option. The first choice was "removable disk" so I hit enter. This went straight to "install windows" No option to repair or anything else.
So I let it formatC and reinstall xp. Luckily it seemed that D and E drives were all OK.
But when I tried to load something . ERROR message! Of course the registry entries were gone!
So complete re-install of everything. Then a series of E-mails all around the world askng for copies of my passwords for about 20 programs. I'm still waiting for replies.
The cause of all problems. Installing Internet Explorer 8 beta. And then uninstalling it again

And for those of you who read my posts on my internet speed running at half it's usual speed. My download speed is still only running at half the speed I've been getting for the past year!

Happy New Year !

2. Put your passwords for whatever in a text file, and put it on the spare partition/s. Then you wont have to email whoever, to get them back

733458 2008-12-29 21:14:00 I export my FF passwords to an Excel file kept on an encrypted flash drive and the same with all my software passwords as well as keeping them on the data drive in my comp so they are always to hand if needed gary67 (56)

You most likely had not disabled the Automatically Restart idiocy. Do it now. Control Panel - System - Advanced - Startup.

That way it will BSOD and you can see what the likely cause is.

You don't boot off Removable. You boot off the CD, the first option is R for Recovery or Enter to install.
Enter.

The 2nd option - if it is actually Repairable - is R for Repair or Enter to install.

You should, once you have it all back to working condition is use an Image program to backup c: drive. That way you don't have any where near as much hassle to go through should something happen again.

As for passwords, you shouldn't do that - its not secure. I just remember my 52 login/passwords I have. If you use them regularly its not that hard, don't use auto logins or have cookies so it remembers them and logs you in.

That's a really good idea! Having Acronis True Image Home (and I think Seagate does a version of it too) and an image of C Drive on an old HDD set up as an external drive has got me out of a few scrapes in the last nine months (and it only takes less than 30 minutes from wow to go, so to speak!). All I have to remember is to take a backup of my Outlook files (and can do that in Safe Mode if I need to) and I'm on my way. :clap
