733399 2008-12-29 10:18:00 Commenced my first ever torrent download earlier this evening :horrified

The file size is 356 MB

So far it has taken 3 hours 41 minutes with another 1 hour 40 to go :angry:angry

Am I correct is assuming that my download speed is dictated by my upload speed?

This is ridiculous.....................

733400 2008-12-29 10:20:00 No doesnt it depend on how many peers/seeders there are.

If there's not many, the slower it'll be

733401 2008-12-29 10:40:00 Your upload speed plays a part, the faster that is the better. But don't go too high or it'll actually make things worse (too many outgoing connections will swamp the rest of your outgoing packets)

General rule is about 80% of total upload capacity - this is assuming you're only running torrents and nothing else.

Also, you need a good amount of seeds on the torrent, and a decent ratio of peers. If there are say 5 seeds and 100 peers then things can get quite bad.

Also, you must have an opened port in your router and firewall (if applicable). Make sure it's not the default port as often traffic on this port will be slowed by your ISP etc. Then again some ISPs slow all bittorrent traffic on all ports and this may also be part of your problem. Something very high usually works best

What client are you using? I find uTorrent to be very good. Whatever you use, if you have the option to enable encryption you should do so.

733402 2008-12-29 11:33:00 I'm using uTorrent

2 of 4 seeds

13 of 28 peers

whatever all that means :(

733403 2008-12-29 11:46:00 You should probably read up on how the Bit Torrent protocol works computer.howstuffworks.com

Then you'll know :D

733404 2008-12-29 14:14:00 Basically you need a good seed to peer ratio, 2 seeds to 1 peer offers great speed, when searching for torrents 200 seeds for every 300 peers is good.

You should check out torrentfly, its shows the how many seeds and peers are online realtime which is great.

You might want to set up port forwarding on your router too, you'll get better speeds

Cheers
Blam

(btw don't mention what you're downloading...)
EDIT:Your download speeds will increase if you upload more.
Know as the tit for tat theory

733405 2008-12-30 21:10:00 Torrents work when people actually share. Many download, share slightly, then stop sharing as soon as complete. More often they throttle it so you only get ~4kB/s from each.

Ive had torrents going as fast as my line can go on occasion (~3.5mBit)

733406 2008-12-30 23:25:00 Hopefully, I won't need to use Torrent again :(

The quality of the NYPD Blue episode that I did download, was nothing short of amazing :)

P.S. Why was it suggested that I not state what I was downloading?

Heres how to get them legally - NYPD Blue website (www.tv.com) - Purchase from Itunes (www.imagef1.net.nz) But the catch is you need a USA Account.

I had checked that site out.

Unfortunately Season 12, Episode 18 is not available, and I "stuffed up" my recording of it on The Box the previous week :(

Are you trying to tell me that no one on this forum NEVER downloads pirated material?

Like the Tui ads say: "YEAH RIGHT" :clap:clap
