532752 2007-03-13 23:36:00 Well, here I am, sitting in the computer lab of Massey University, palmerston North, typing this on a mac.
I had a bit of time to kill where I wasn't doing anything of vast importance, so I timidly ventured into the mac part of the general comp lab. I was greeted by rows of white LCD's (btw, the windows machines only have HP 17in crt's). Sitting down at a machine, I am confronted by a login screen. I type in my login details and settle in to wait...
But hang on, it is ready to go within seconds. What gives?? The windows machines take AGES to login.
This is where the experience starts to fall down though. How on earth can apple, which makes good hardware, design such an AWFUL mouse??
I find it is clumsy, uncomfortable, and the (single) button far too easy to click inadvertantly. Combined with the fact that it has no scroll wheel, and it is THE most awful mouse that I have ever used.
Now you could say that you can plug any USB mouse into a mac, however this is a university I'm at, and that sort of thing is frowned upon for some reason...
Having said that, the monitor is an absolute joy to use and once you get used to it, OSX is also very nice to use. Fast too. None of the hard disk grinding that we get with the windows machines in the lab.
I think that I could stand to use a mac at home (with my own mouse of course), if only I could afford one...
Now to go and do some more exploring.......

Fair enough.
I still don't really understand why Apple decided to go with such a design though. Granted, it LOOKS stylish, but not terribly practical to use.

I should probably shut up now before getting into further trouble.....

They do have a new mouse that has a rotating ball instead of a wheel.

532756 2007-03-14 02:50:00 The Mac mouse issue is one that is regularly debated amongst mac operators as well. I know there are a number of mac ops in the trade who prefer to use assorted PC mice on their macs rather than the one button Apple mouse. They do take a bit of getting used. I myself am quite happy using a Mac mouse with my right hand and doing the left hand on keyboard for keyboard shortcuts. It is pretty fast when your used to it.

Good luck with your discovery adventures.

No flaming required. Originally it was a design decision based on the theory that computer users wouldn't know how to use a 2 button mouse so Apple made it a one button affair. The decision was made back in 1984 which was when Apple first intro'd the original Macintosh with Mac GUI along with their famous Super Bowl advert.

PS Starting at the Mac mini they are not that pricey unless your from the customise and build it yourself brigade.

The single button mouse works ok in combination with the control key, but those used to more buttons do find it very frustrating having to keep one hand near the keyboard all the time. As mentioned above, Apple began shipping a multi button mouse with a scroll ball with all new Macs about 18 months ago. maccrazy (6741)
532759 2007-03-14 06:31:00 It's a damn fool computer that demands I put down my slice of pizza. When I find my habits being dictated by a machine, it is time to junk the machine. If it suits, use it, if not ditch it. I am probably biased due to being accustomed to a 7 button mouse.

Satire duly noted ;):p
It should also be noted that a user who knows their keyboard shortcuts is faster than one who only uses a mouse - unless as with some applications, there are no shortcuts associated with the task.
