532598 2007-03-13 07:15:00 unwatermarked photos on the net free of copyright? Is it normal for people like celebrities to put unwatermarked photos on the net? I have seen some people on other websites selling unwatermarked photos of celebrities and they say it's not copyrighted. is this true? lance4k (4644)
532599 2007-03-13 08:21:00 Just because a photo doesn't have a watermark doesn't mean it isn't copyrighted. maccrazy (6741)

Yes. Everything you read on the internet is true.

532602 2007-03-15 01:19:00 EVERYTHING is protected by copyright for a statutory period . The copyright is owned by someone; the creator, or the creator's employer, or the creator's heirs, or someone the creator has sold the copyright to .

It doesn't make any difference whether there is a "copyright" symbol and date or a watermark or any other "reminder" . Copyright exists in the object . Only if you have explicit permission from the copyright owner are you entitled to use the object .

Some people give that permission with use of the "Creative Commons" or similar terms, which allow use with proper acknowledgement and some restrictions which protect the creator's rights .

Sometimes an object is explicitly put into the public domain .

But putting somthing on a web site does not put it in the public domain, just as publishing a book (or CD or DVD ;) ) does not .

Is this so difficult to understand?
