531688 2007-03-10 19:42:00 I have used 2 working sony handycams to replay VIDEO8 tape recorded 10 years ago:

on both cameras some of my older tapes just do not replay - say after about 20 minutes - they just drop out and black appears while the tape keeps running. If I fast forward now, the picture will show, and play fine with the typical blur strips of fast forward mode, which means the tape is not blank. That is good news, the data is not lost. But how can I retrieve it???

What to do? Have you come across this problem,:lease:

Have you tried recording the V8 tapes onto VHS and then try the tracking
control on the VHS.
But I have the feeling that the tapes are stuffed.
Oh do you have sound when the tapes go to black ?

But how can I retrieve it???Sounds like the sync pulses have weakened deeper into the tape where it is wound tighter and magnetic write-through is more likely have occurred. Not only that, if your cameras have had a fair amount of use, the sync head may be worn or dirty and that too could affect sync detection and cause video muting.

When image synchronisation is lost, video (and possibly sound) are automatically muted. When you fast forward, the remanent signal from the sync pulses is increased (inductive effect increases with frequency) so the video un-mutes.

If the content is important to you, I would not play with them in any way, I'd take them straight to a professional tape transcription service. They should have equipment that can recover weak sync and can also digitise your analog video (if 10 years old it is almost certainly not digital, though it is not impossible) which will preserve the remaining quality for the future.

Of course I could be wrong, but that's my take on it and you will definitely have your best shot at recovery via a professional service.

Cheers
