531363 2007-03-12 07:37:00 From that 'feature' list, it doesn't sound very impressive. byte (11156)
531364 2007-03-12 09:37:00 Server now up and running, doing the 1st series of network backups. the platform is very easy to use..

I just need a free a/v programme to run on server o/s!?

531365 2007-03-12 10:11:00 Are you able to post any screen shots for a comparison, SolMeister?
Edit: Don't worry I am checking it out on Paul Thurotts site.

531366 2007-03-12 11:49:00 The backup side of things sounds nice, something I could do with around here to say the least :D Chilling_Silence (9)
531367 2007-03-15 08:23:00 Signed up to the beta program invitation 3-4 days ago and can't wait to get a response!
This thing looks fantastic!

531368 2007-03-15 08:33:00 I will be interested to see how it compares with other systems which should become evident in a couple of weeks or so. winmacguy (3367)
531369 2007-03-15 09:17:00 Meh, I removed a 2nd 20gb drive that i had thought would be a good addition to the 160gb drive. The platform uses new technology to span the drives in order to have 1 logical/dynamic drive volume, however this process does EAT cpu cycles like they are going out of fashion.
I admit, the pc i have it running on is a bit of a 'frankenstein', as MS calls it, but i believed that the idea was to use dating hardware as it is supposed to be just a file server.

Plll800 512 RAM, and the cpu was pinned 70-90% alot of the time. MS does warn that an external USB1.1 interface would cause slow down, however these drive were both set as masters on independance ide channels, with share duplication (simple mans RAID...LOL) only on about 10gb worth of data.

Now the damn NIC has deceided to drop packet which has really slowed me down as I have had to dig out an old 10mb half duplex card...mahwahhhh!...oh the pain!

Gonna have to rumble another old box tomorrow!

531370 2007-03-15 09:38:00 Probably just as well it is in beta then. I would imagine that your setup would potentially be similar to what a lot of home users will have but without your technical knowledge, SolMeister. winmacguy (3367)
531371 2007-03-15 09:48:00 Just out of interest, if I don't get an invite to join the beta program for Windows Home Server which I was wanting to use for the following principle reasons:
* Have all storage/data only hard drives stored in 1 place rather than across 2-3 PCs
* Access/stream media from the 'server PC' to my existing 3 PCs
* Backup & data storage

Would Small Business Server 2003 do just as good a job and be just as media-sharing "friendly" as Windows Home Server (ideally) promises to be?

Thanks in advance

WHS is Server 2003, except, it has a Windows Media centre type of added front end. You can still create a domain, dhcp server, dns & wins. The idea is that none of that is required and simple user accounts such as XP user account and rights are employed.

WHS also has a couple of new technology's as Disk Expander (dynamic volume) to span disks and SIS (single instance something or rather...LOL) for back up where only 1 copy of the file is imaged during backups of any pc.

So, long story short, yes, yes, sort of......haha.
