733617 2008-12-31 21:46:00 Re above post. Looks like Status Info etc which are greyed out might only be available in the Pro edition. So, I now have Avast, CCleaner, AD-ware, and Trojan Remover installed and Windows Firewall enabled. Anything else I need. Thanks. bellbird (6169)

733620 2009-01-01 06:45:00 I am a new convert (press-ganged ?) to Avast.

For years I have used AVG (since the 90's !). But version 8.00 blew it for me.

It is too resource hungry and has too many bugs that they are just not fixing (see their forum !)

So I was very pleased to try Avast and find that it works well. I had a friend's laptop that was unusable and ran Avast and it picked up about 20 viruses and now it goes really well.

However I do find Avast's user interface a bit confusing (and childish). Some settings you change via the pull downmenu, others you change by right clicking on the avast "a" ball icon.

Also it seems to have a couple of bugs one is that if you select some folders to scan, it goes ahead and scans your whole drive(s) anyway !

 I don't think I have ever changed any of Avast's settings via a "pull down menu". I have always right-clicked on Avast's Tasktray icon to access settings.

If you want to scan certain folders and not the entire hard drive, right-click on the folder in Windows Explorer and select the "Scan with Avast" option. It will only scan one folder (and the sub-folders within) at a time but that is still faster than doing the entire drive.

That's what I did and it scanned the whole drive and my physical D: drive as well.

But I will try it again.
