733386 2009-01-02 19:20:00 Before you do anything, perhaps you should completely uninstall the program that came with the camera then, reinstall the lot using the install default settings .

Sometimes, if you connect a USB device when there are no drivers for it, things can go wrong?

My camcorders from the last 10 years have been 1394, but yours is definitley USB . Forget about 1394/firewire and start afresh .

If the thing still doesn't work, then Speedy's advice is the next step . Take it back and complain!

733387 2009-01-02 19:30:00 Do any USB ports work??

If they dont (if whoever did replace the motherboard). Check the BIOS to see if USB Hispeed is enabled

If whoever didnt replace the motherboard, it'll probably have to be replaced, the USB ports probably got fried, and theyre dead

733389 2009-01-03 16:42:00 Well, I've really come to the same conclusion that it will have to go back to the 'shop'. Unfortunately they will not reopen until at least 7th Jan and then there will be a rush of people wanting their service (to be paid for of course) and they won't want to touch my problem as there's no extra cash involved - I hope. I shall also have to be with them to go through it all this time with camera & software, which they definitely won't like. Tough.
All the USB ports show up in DevMan and do work as I've tried all of them in turn. Anyway folks, I'll keep watching in case something else comes up that you may think of.
I'll check the BIOS USB Hispeed next boot up.
Grateful thanks to all.

733390 2009-01-07 14:41:00 Update: I went to the guru/repair shop today and they couldn't care less. Rude was the least of my reception worries.
They won't allow me to 'sit in' with camera, software etc. and gave me a suspicous time to turn up in the evening when I suspect they will not be open even if the 'hours of opening' say they will be.
Come to the conclusion that I will have to take advantage of Sales prices and buy a new laptop (present one is desktop) on an installment basis, purely to regain the use of my camcorder.
Moral of problem: if you are not in the county of your birth (i.e. a foreign language situation) DON'T use a local guru if at all possible. I believe in treating people as I would want to be treated but there are times .........
Anyone want to buy a perfectly good second hand video cam?

733391 2009-01-14 15:50:00 As suspected, treated like dirt when I took the 'tower' back to the guru/shop. Not interested.
Decided to get a firewire port (1394) installed and attachable cable to video cam, from a village an hours drive away. How much would you expect to pay for this? Guideline for me to say nay or yay.
Off subject - any ideas as to best internet security/anti spam for home user, no network, etc. etc. package to go for? My subscription is up for renewal shortly and am not too happy with Norton (which I've been faithful to for years) but it slows down or possibly conflicts with everything else.
Thank you.

733392 2009-01-14 17:37:00 Get rid of Norton and go for Avast free anti virus, Comodo free firewall, or second choice Zone alarm free firewall. Anti spam have at least 2 maybe Malwarebytes, super anti spyware. Don't know about the firewire port gary67 (56)
733393 2009-01-14 20:02:00 For the firewire port, it'll set you back 30-50 bucks:

733394 2009-01-14 20:54:00 Just wait a moment there Pensioner...

From what I have seen in your camcorder's review it doesn't have a firewire port. This being so, You are wasting money as you cannot use a firewire port on a computer unless your camcorder has one to send from.

It appears that your camcorder is a 40GB hard drive model and as usual for this type, has a USB port for transfer of video. Here is the URL for you to look at.

733395 2009-01-15 17:49:00 Kenj, you're so right. Tried on trusted friend's pc but no port on pc or camera for 1934 cable, so glad I didn't go down that route. Obviously must get pc to another 'guru' (and leave for a week) to see if he can fix original problem - no recognition. Temped by ads on this site for same thing - any thoughts?
Re upcoming 'security package', thanks Gary 67 for your imput. Have heard of Avast and will look into the others ou suggested. Thanks also beama and blam 6 for input. Much appreciated by a novice.
