532010 2007-03-12 06:02:00 I don't believe Harvey Norman know much about computers. They are just a mass marketer.

I don't think you can say that about retailers. They are only as good as their salespeople. I guess I am a sheep.... Baaaa... but I bought my laptop a year go from Hardly Normals. I had a list of requirements for video editing and I struck a good salesman who understood exactly what I needed and recommended a machine that today runs a clean Vista install and edits HD Video, pretty darned fast too.

By the same token, just before this, I had walked out of a specialist computer shop after I was fed a load of BS by a nerdy looking guy.

It ain't the company, it's the salesman that makes or breaks a sale

532011 2007-03-12 06:49:00 Well, they obviously CAN'T be useless 24/7. (Bet that salesman has gone to a real computer shop now.) ;) R2x1 (4628)

The next 3 to 4 months worth of Year To Date sales figures should be able to confirm your statement Hitech especially if they continue to show a sustained percentage increase in the double or triple figures.

532014 2007-03-12 10:29:00 Funny, the Microsoft fans will wildly believe that Vista is a huge success... but fail to listen when told that Firefox is starting to gain a huge market-share, or that Linux in the server market is at an all-time high... things like that?!

I'll happily believe that for the first few months, sales _are_ going to be high. Of course, its a new product, idiots believe that the MUST have it coz "its what everybody has", even if they're worse-off getting it.

Like a mate of mine said "I wanna learn to ride a motorbike on a Harley". I tried and tried to convince him not to, but to start with a nice small easy-to-ride 250cc bike (Surprisingly enough, he didnt care that you couldnt ride a bike bigger than 250cc).. but he said "No, Its gotta be a Harley Davidson, everybody whos a true biker has one". Idiot.

Id be keen to see some real numbers in comparison with other OS sales. Of all the people I know that've just bought new PCs, there was 7 laptops and 3 desktops. One desktop had Vista as did two of the laptops... the rest were all XP. Perhaps thats just me... coz I recommended they _dont_ go to Harvey Normans for their machines ;)

Erm, it's called training and hiring the right staff for the job, though sometimes that means paying bananas instead of peanuts. It's not the exclusive right of large chain stores to be slack when it comes to providing customers with service.

On the other point, laptops are usually fairly easy to get right. They almost always proprietary, name brand and/or re-badged hardware. The good brands are well know and you generally gets whats youse pays for. It's pretty hard to stuff up unless you get a lemon.

532016 2007-03-12 11:19:00 Vista a total failure? Rubbish. It is outselling the Zune by almost a fair bit. R2x1 (4628)

532018 2007-03-12 21:23:00 Will it still do that if it was on a conveyor belt matched to the speed of the wheels?:D  JackStraw (6573)
