531353 2007-03-09 18:37:00 From what I've read about the Zune, it should have stayed in the "I'll think about it bin".

Or the bin.

It doesnt do much, even tho its got Wifi, it only communicates with other Zunes, nothing else.

You only get 3 plays of a song if u copy something to it, (from another Zune), and it dies in 3 days.

You cant download directly to it, from the web site, you have to do it via a PC.

So basically it doesnt work with anything else, its just a box with a screen, Wifi, and FM.

531354 2007-03-09 18:50:00 Exactly. A good idea that is already being done very successfully by another competitor that was over hyped, was designed by committee from a rehashed Toshiba Gigabeat (I think) with a really bad colour scheme, loaded with usage limiting DRM with too many features that MS thinks people want that don't actually work in practice. It was supposed to "squirt" songs to other Zune users...not good when your main colour is brown... ;)

It was also loosing $50 US per unit sold and "hoping" to sell 1 million units by June 2007. Microsoft also fired the head of the Zune development team recently due to a poor launch.

Now they want to launch Windows Home Server...?

531355 2007-03-09 20:22:00 Perhaps the Zune is an attempt to do to music what Windows did to software. Unfortunately for them, but fortunately for us, this time they have no IBM to drag them into domination. R2x1 (4628)

531357 2007-03-09 23:15:00 I use Linux Home Server. Very versatile you know. Its never been formally announced though :D dolby digital (5073)
531358 2007-03-10 00:02:00 I believe that Microsoft is discovering what it is like to compete on a level playing field against very tough innovative competition and they are coming up short.
MS PR is telling the Australian consumers NOT to buy the Zune yet since it is not ready for Vista according to Microsoft. Pretty clever eh.

531359 2007-03-10 22:42:00 Windows Home Server is not just for media storage.

It also backs up all connected XP/Vista PCs on the LAN - automagically - similar to the way DPM works.

It comes with a boot/recovery CD, so if your XP/Vista install gets toasted, you place the recovery CD in your XP/Vista PC, click a couple of prompts and your OS and programs and documents get restored in one operation.

It has a very sweet disk setup, sort of a mix of RAID and JBOD, but just as a "storage pool" rather than "drive lettered". Disks can be added to the pool exceptionally easily, and they can be internal, or external (USB or LAN).

The plan is to sell WHS as "headless" units from the likes of DSE, Noel Leemings, Harvey Norman, etc. for the masses, where you just plug it in and it does it's work.

Sure, you can probably do all the above with a Linux box - but only after a few or many hours of installing and configuring. But MS have aimed WHS for the "mom and pop" who are about as techno-literate as George W Bush is intelligent. :p

Have a read here (www.winsupersite.com) and here (arstechnica.com).

531360 2007-03-11 00:02:00 WHS is designed to help keep little Willy Gates at the top of the rich list There's nothing wrong with that, just so long as you are aware of it. If your desire is to have a good home server, there are plenty of choices, but none will help little Willy Gates. R2x1 (4628)
531361 2007-03-11 03:07:00 Any idea what it will sell for? (I did a quick goggle and found nothing). dolby digital (5073)
531362 2007-03-11 22:54:00 I think they're aiming for the $1200 mark for a pre-installed box. Dunno about the software itself. Antmannz (6583)
