| 531077 | 2007-03-08 03:38:00 | Hmm.... The nearest situation to corruption I directly came across in the Public Service was the scandal over the CNG 'Bogap' gas cylinders, made by a now defunct Italian firm. These cylinders were so out of specification, and potentially so dangerous they should never have been approved. I strongly suspected backhanders to the then MOT by the Italians and or the importers who just happened to have a reported $1 million worth in stock, to ignore the standards governing CNG cylinders. They were eventually withdrawn and taken out of cars when even the MOT could no longer ignore the danger. I believe one ruptured and exploded before that step was taken. |

Anything to link government dept's to thinking, no matter how tenuously, is a great initiative. A bit of shock treatment may be just what they need. |

| 531080 | 2007-03-08 06:09:00 | Well most of them are corrupt. Even tho I've worked for 2 of them. But you've got noone else to blame but the govt. They make the rules. And the dept's have to abide by them. |

| 531081 | 2007-03-08 06:48:00 | I also find the word corruption pretty daft in the NZ context (Nothing more constructive to do last night, Utopia?), so won't be voting. Many of us have experience of someone in a government department who seemed thick, inept or over-officious. But even suspecting a backhander somewhere shouldn't tar a whole system with a word whose meaning is completely overkill. Those who believe it should try living overseas in "certain countries" to experience what corruption really is. (Thanks for that link, Winston. I knew we'd come up smelling of roses in a worldwide study, but didn't remember where) |

| 531082 | 2007-03-08 06:59:00 | Had to deal with more then one or two corrupt filthy cops in my time, a damn shame, but I wouldn't consider the Police force to be a corrupt organization, Plenty of tossers but thats the sort of person such a job attracts. The prison system is almost openly corrupted, at least on its lower levels, But again, Its a prison after all, Not exactly a healthy environment, If you want to talk to someone who has his brain messed with too many times then go have a chat to a career prison guard, No idea what up or down is anymore. Still..........Nothing on Russia:rolleyes: |

| 531085 | 2007-03-08 12:14:00 | most corrupt? where's parliament? doesn't stealing money for electioneering and then retrospectively changing the law with their power to make it legal and not have to pay it back count as corruption, or is that mere abuse of the system? possibly prisons are the worst corrupted after what i saw on the news of prison guard smuggling drugs/smokes/food/women in exchange for cash:groan: It's a disgrace that a criminal can steal/assault and either be let off with a minor fine they don't actually have to pay and/or they are rewarded with free rent, free food, free gymnasium, free power and water, get to make connection with other criminals and even get free SKY ***:yuck: perhaps if the punishments for crimes weren't so soft, and they lowered the minimum inmate age to 16 (and had a youth prison with schooling), we wouldn't have so many problems. not a solution, if anything sterilisation would help there to stop the problem spreading:rolleyes: |

If you have your own nominee, then list it in comments. 20/20 vision does not guarantee perfect sight. "I think I can see it" the voice beside me stated, hoping that by the end of the sentence, he would indeed have picked out the sparkling sharp outlines against the soft translucent haze of the horizon. Luckily it was the beginning of summer, and the early dawn began clear and cloud-free; the crispness of the calm air still clutched the flat sea as though it too, was reminiscing over the majestic aura of the sunrise earlier. His next words belied his previous tones. "What exactly am I looking for? he said enquiringly. I gestured to the device resembling a small telescope cradled in his left hand. "Maybe you'll find it better with that!" I raised my binoculars to scan the line where the sea sparkled against the gold tinged sky. With the immense magnification of the optics, I was able to pick it out clearly. "Wow" breathed the voice beside me, "what amazing colours". I too, had settled my gaze on the firestorm of brilliant bouncing hues. It was as though someone had scattered millions of diamonds across the cap, and each facet was vying for the honour of having reflected the most vivid and widest spectrum. At that moment, the reality came back to me. "This is just the tip of it" I stated, matter-of-factly. "We can see, what... fifty or so metres sticking out of the water, whereas there are possibly a thousand or more below, and many thousands across". "A sea captain once told me that it is what you do not see that sinks your ship," I added after a brief pause. I slid my eyes away from the inspiring spectacle to glance at the stranger beside me. Then I chuckled, now noticing what he had held in his hand. "You won't see any of the iceberg through a kaleidoscope". |
