733859 2008-12-31 21:11:00 Hi,

Slow broadband connection and having little joy with the xtra help desk, so hoping someone here might be able to help me isolate what the problem is.
Pretty new to networking stuff so please bear with me; spent an hour or so reading this morning and wondered whether the following might be of use:

Using a combined modem/router D-Link DSL 502T.
Interestingly, run Ubuntu linus on a second partition and connections there are faster, although still much slower than usual.
Have tried with IE7 and FF3 so don't think it's a browser issue.

733861 2008-12-31 21:32:00 Thanks for the reply,

Spoke to my parents (their computer) and they're pretty sure they didn't.

The Xtra help desk/technicians have been of little use so far; they "escalated" the problem five days ago after it was found we were being disconnected every 4-15 minutes.
A technician called a couple of days later, said everything looked fine at that moment, and wanted to close the case!!!
He grudgingly agreed to keep it open, and we're meant to get a call today.
Was hoping I could provide him with some stats that might point him in the right direction - would these be useful?

733862 2008-12-31 21:39:00 Is the router's firmware up to date?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
733863 2008-12-31 21:49:00 Hi,

Router firmware is v3.00B1T01.TX20070418. It's what came loaded on the router when my parents got broadband in February.

Cheers,

733864 2008-12-31 22:00:00 Hmm it cant be a revision A modem, since the firmware is from 2006

733865 2008-12-31 22:10:00 Thanks Speedy... but what does that mean?
Networking is not an area I'm familiar with at all. Haven't even got round to connecting all my computers at home!

Cheers,

733866 2008-12-31 22:15:00 Updating the firmware may fix it, if its a revision C modem (look on the bottom, whats it say alongside H/W ver)? Ax or Cx?

Like here (files.dlink.com.au)

Or here (files.dlink.com.au)

And does it say Generation II on the front?? bottom right? like here (files.dlink.com.au)

733867 2008-12-31 22:16:00 So what exactly is the problem.
Are you getting some websites and not others or is your modem disconnecting at times.
Are you getting a steady DSL light on the modem at all times.
When you have a problem have you lost the PPP light indicating it has disconnected from Xtra.
If PPP light goes out does it connect again and come on again by itself.

733868 2008-12-31 22:34:00 The issue is very long delays (in some cases still waiting after 5 minutes - I have timed that with a stopwatch) getting some pages and time out screens apprearing in the browser on other pages.
The sites I'm seeking where there are delays of up to 5min have in the past couple of days included the TAB, Slashdot and Stuff.
Oddly enough, I can go back to those sites a few minutes later and it's much quicker.
Would say the problem is experienced with about 40% of searches/page requests.
Generally things are fine for a few minutes after restarting the computer but then we strike problems again.
Re the loss of the PPP light - is that the ethernet light? If so, it stays on. ADSL is mostly steady, with some blinking at times. Status is blinking pretty much all the time and power is always on.

To Speedy - it's a revision C Generation II model.

Thanks,

Blair
