Here is updated HJT log file I wonder if any clues show up. Appreciate very much if Speedy could have a look. | 733624 | 2008-12-30 06:15:00 | Do you have the drivers installed? Look in Device Manager for any yellow !s. When you log off/shut down, is 'Logging Off' only displayed for a split second, or about 2 seconds? I assume you've checked for a knob somewhere on the laptop that turns the volume up/down manually? |

2008-12-30 07:44:00 | Hi jwil1, Yes drivers are installed ok and are current. No yellow exclamations in Device Manager. Log off/shutdown stays on for a good few seconds. I have tested sound and audio in Control Panel/ Sounds and game controllers, Direct x9 is installed and says no problems with it. There is no knob or switch on outside of laptop case that I can find. Laptop was like this (or worse) when friend gave to me to fix, so don't know how long it has been without sound. Friend is away till Saturday. Would be good if I could fix sound prob for her. Anything in HJT log that gives any clues? Main prob is it only has 192 MB RAM. Cheers LL

2008-12-30 08:47:00 | Is it disabled in the BIOS? Is Wave muted/down in Volume Control? | jwil1 (65) | |
2008-12-30 09:03:00 | Try going back int to the control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices - Under the Audio tab, make sure the actual drivers are selected, and not Modem. If thats OK , look under the Sound Tab, and see what the Sound Scheme is set to, try altering that and see if it makes any difference. Regarding the hijack Log - nothing looks out of place really - you can remove these following dead keys. O3 - Toolbar: P2P Energy Toolbar - {2bae58c2-79f9-45d1-a286-81f911301c3a} - (no file) O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

2008-12-30 09:17:00 | jwil1, No volume controls anywhere are muted, they're all set to about medium. Can't find anything relevant to sound or audio in the BIOS. Wainuitech, Thanks for going through the HJT, I thought I could remove those two things, and you have confirmed that for me. I will check out Sounds and audio devices again etc, also sound scheme. Cheers LL

2008-12-30 15:10:00 | If all fails you can try a repair install | Blam (54) | |
2008-12-30 19:45:00 | Thanks blam6, As you say, if all else fails. I went back into sounds and audio and the sound scheme was set to nothing, so changed it to Windows default, tested it but still no go. Rebooted, still nothing. I downloaded Driver Detective and it picked up that the Realtek Audio driver is out of date, (which I already suspected) I don't want to pay them to download new one, I have tried the REaltek site but when I chose driver to download, the site timed out several times so I gave up on that. Maybe my friend will just be happy that the lappy is going a lot better now and is not worried about sound on it. At least it is usable now and I will recommend that she gets more RAM installed. LL

2008-12-30 20:57:00 | I wouldn't worry to much about driver detective saying its out of date - This PC I'm on now is 3 years old, and my laptop 5 years old, never had the audio drivers updated and the sounds as good as the day they were installed. Try this - click start/run type in sfc /scannow - press Enter. let it do a system scan for damaged or missing files. Just in case - try plugging in a set of normal speakers into the headphone jack, see if you get sound - its to test if the speakers on the laptop are actually working. Also check the speakers are set to laptop - on my Acer Laptop you can change them to other devices.Control Panel/Sounds and audio devices/volume/Advanced. What model of TOSHIBA is the Laptop - try the original drivers from TOSHIBA . if you Go Here (eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com) - work through the menu and download / install the manufactures drivers.
