733339 2008-12-29 07:53:00 ok..this is my question..

1. does upgrading from vista home premium to ultimate worth it?
2. does upgrading keeps files and settings intact?
3. does upgrading needs vista serials or keys or whatever you call them? (got OEM version installed in lappy)
4. does the vista ultimate disk and upgrade disk different?

NOTE:
i got:

Toshiba Satellite M300 Laptop
OS:Vista Home Premium (OEM got the recovery disk only) build 60001
Processor: intel core 2 duo cpu @ 2.00ghz
RAM: 2gb
Display: Mobile intel 965 express chipset family

another note: my friend had its vista ultimate installed on its FREE DOS laptop but with lower specs (ram is 1.5gm and processor is at 1.8 duo) same display but i dont know why he does not run aero on his lappy...thanks for any advices..:clap

733340 2008-12-29 08:17:00 In Order -
1. Only if you need the additional features that Ultimate offers.

2.Should do - but always pays to take a backup of important data etc first.

3.YES ! the key is what determines what version of Vista is installed - all versions are on the One DVD - If you use a Premium key you will get premium, if you use a Ultimate key you will get Ultimate.

4. YES - the upgrade Disk, is just that an upgrade Disk,(But you can do a fresh install with an upgrade disk if you know how :nerd: ) once again different product key to OEM, Retail etc. The OEM version of Vista has the upgrade disabled - the retail Version doesn't but is more expensive.

Regarding the Aero - it could be turned off, or the graphics cant handle aero by default.
Could also be turned off on the laptop, as Aero does take a fair amount of system resources, which in turn will slow down the Laptop.

733341 2008-12-29 08:22:00 1. Definitely not worth it.
2. Yes(Things sometimes stuff up though, a clean install is best)
3. Yes, the vista ultimate disk will come with a kye.
4. Yes, you can do a clean install with a vista ultimate retail disk, but not with an upgrade disk, you need a previous version of windows(only theoretically as people have found a way to do a full install with an upgrade disk)

Oh, and an upgrade disk is much cheaper.

Why exactly do you want to upgrade to ultimate?
Maybe there is a cheaper or free alternative to what you want?

733343 2008-12-29 08:44:00 ITS NOT FASTER THAN PREMIUM!!!!
And it probably eats up more battery power too, with all that extra crap.

As for that last question....

NO!!!

733344 2008-12-29 17:38:00 I'd suggest wait for Windows 7 and upgrade to the 64-bit version of that.

Regarding Aero, Vista prob turned it off during install, so need to manually turn it on.

733345 2008-12-29 20:58:00 Definitely not worth the extra money. all the things it provides with perhaps the exception of dreamscenes which are a giant waste of time are replaceable quickly for free from the net. kersonan (13264)
