532072 2007-03-11 20:55:00 Households will have to pay $300 for a set-top box to view Freeview's "free-to-air" satellite TV service .

Experts say people will also have to pay double the $150-$200 price tag touted by the Government to buy a satellite dish and have it installed .

Thats stupid, all that money to get the same rubbish thats on now .
I'll stick to Sky .

532073 2007-03-11 21:14:00 I see the decoders are cheap taiwanese rubbish, i prefer to use the sky dish and buy a better stb which you keep and pay no more to view. These boxes that freeview are offering dont look very reliable to me, google (Zinwell) to get a look at these set top boxes. Hitech (9024)

With an average viewing time of under half an hour per week, I'll save a bundle and ignore the lot of them.
(Bad consumer! Go stand in the corner.)

They provide free programming in a new digital format, you buy the equipment you need to take advantage of the service . Sounds pretty simple to me .

You didn't get your current TV or TV aerial free, what part of this very simple consumer transaction don't you understand?

Cheers

532076 2007-03-11 21:45:00 quotes from that article....

It is in the final stages of approving a second, made by Australian firm Hills Signalmaster. afaik hills don't make them, they are simply rebadged recievers proberly chiense made.

Freeview.. has certified a set-top box who cares. you can buy whatever box you like. kinda the point with free to air tv. there is no point to certifinng the boxes for tv reception. are all tv's and video's certified ?????

Kevin Colley, general manager of Zinwell distributor Next Electronics, says it will supply 65cm satellite dishes made by Zinwell that are "better quality" than Sky's dishes and less subject to "rain fade". yes as its slightly bigger than skys. BUT a lot depends on whayt LNB gets bolted onto the dish and how the dish is installed. nothing stopping you buying a far bigger dish and having a lot less rain fade problems.

One says cheap "papier mache" dishes tend to quickly disintegrate when faced with New Zealand's high winds. actually they tend to stay up better as they flex more which unloads the wind load on them. stiff strong dishs catch more wind putting more strain on them. in any case it dosn't matter if installed correctly which will be the biigest problem.
the biggest hassle is the UV eating the plastic parts.

Freeview's digital terrestrial television (DTT) service which needs a set-top box but no satellite dish, and on which most of the hopes of free-to- air television are pinned, will launch early next year. Mr Maharey said DTT would reach people in New Zealand's 10 biggest cities. About a quarter of the population will only be able to access the satellite service:horrified DTT is a pain, i'll bet money that it will be more hassle than its worth.

532077 2007-03-11 21:48:00 I understand clearly that you have to pay for a box and dish but to call it freeview when it clearly isnt cause you are paying for it to be set up whereas sky you pay all the time cause its a pay per view service of which i do have and enjoy watching.Freeview has nothing new to attract me to switch to it and won't be able to compete with sky as sky has more variety than what freeview ever will. That's what happens when you let two monopoly suppliers have the market for 12 months. Bet these same brands cost less that $100 in Ozz.

i don't follow your logic on this. its free to air tv as you already have today. only difference it will have all/most free to air channels. tv1@2 allready exist free to air digital via satelite.

it no difference from normall recepetion on an aerial, you still have to pay to get it installed.

with sky your paying for the install as its part of the monthy fee.

don't forget in skys early days, you had to pay full retail price to the installer for the install (and BUY the decoder) as well as pay the monthly to sky. then sky did it all inhouse so they could do atractive install prices and recoup it with the increased monthly fee.

As Billy T said you had to pay for your TV and your aerial plus the cabling plus someone to put it up. So there are set up costs. BUT to view the content is free....as in "Freeview" ......Your lucky your not paying a TV Licence fee anymore.....THEN it wouldn't be free.
