734675 2009-01-03 06:48:00 I have recently bought a new mobo and am planning on (trying) to build a new machine. The mobo is an Asus and does not have graphics on board so I will need to get a graphics card.

The mobo is PCI-E (but it looks like it is just PCI-E x16 not 2.0). For the graphics card I am looking at a Nvidia 9400gt card. The particular card I'm looking at states that the bus is PCI-E 2.0. I have read that PCI-E is backward and forward compatible but will the card work ok? Are there likely to be any problems caused by running a PCI-E2.0 card with a PCI-E x16 slot?

Secondly, to be honest I don't know a great deal about graphics card specs, is there much performance difference between a 9400 and say a 8600 card (as they are similarly priced?

Thirdly the particular card I'm looking at has dual DVI-I out puts. It does not have a VGA output. I don't have a lcd screen yet so I was wanting to use my current monitor which has a VGA connection. Can I just use a VGA to DVI adaptor?

And lastly how much power does a card like this use? I have an enermax 485w PSU that I was hoping will be powerful enough to run the new machine.

As always thanks to anyone who reads my novel above and offers any advice, much appreciated.

Cheers. M.

2. 8600gt is better, especially in games

3. yes you can use an adapter (dongole). It should come with either gfx card.

4. your power supply should be fine for either card.
