I have an PCI-e 8500 GT 512 Mb (Gigabyte) i that performs fine for most functions however when playing NFS undercover about 20 mins into the game the card starts whistling cant figure this out as the card meets EA's minimum required specs Any help would be great

P4 3.0 Ghz
2 Gb Ram

Coolermaster 460 Watt PSU

Thanks in advance

734012 2009-01-01 20:48:00 Is the cards temperature OK?

If you don't have a utility to check this, then SIW (free version) (www.gtopala.com) has a GPU temperature tool.

734013 2009-01-01 22:15:00 Thats the fan getting up to speed as the card gets hot. Alot of graphics cards have variable speed fans on them and as the hotter the card gets the faster the fan goes. It could also be your cpu fan as per the before reasons.

734015 2009-01-02 01:52:00 Are you sure its the graphics card. More likely the fan on the cpu.

734018 2009-01-02 07:34:00 My old 8600GT just had a heat sink......lovely and quiet...and didnt take up too much space either!! RusEvo (3572)
734019 2009-01-02 08:52:00 My old GeForce 4 Ti4200 used to make a whistling sound when running certain 3D screensavers and some games.

I never determined the exact cause, but it wasn't the fan, which was at 100% all the time, (I don't think the GeForce 4s even had variable fan control)

I'd take a (possibly dodgy) guess and say it was something vibrating under a higher current draw at a high frequency (probably a coil of some sort)

It may also be caused by the card not getting enough power.

The sound may also be coming from your PSU or something on your motherboard for the same reasons. Best way to find the location is with a cardboard tube and your ear.
