| 533851 | 2007-03-17 21:42:00 | Ok, I know there are a few car types here so ill ask about a situation we are having: My Partners brother bought a car through a private deal with a blown transmission. We took it to a pro shop in Te Rapa to get fixed. They ordered the necessary parts and tried to install them. They put the new parts in wrong and buggered the gear box in the process. During this time the brother has been ringing them up to find out about his car as it has been now a month in the shop, they didnt contact him once. When he visited the shop they admitted completely wrecking his gear box and stuffing up the original job. So where should or does he do now? He wants his car back but at the moment it is useless, he is worried they are going to charge him for their mistakes and isn't mechanically minded to know if it would show on his bill (if they actually fix it). Your thoughts? TIA:waughh: |

Either way I'd be asking these guys what they intend to do about it, getting an itemised bill if they fix it or taking it back and sending it elsewhere (probably the best idea seeing as they are incompetent) and making the 1st lot pay for the repair. |

Don't be pedantic pctek - an auto transmission is still a gearbox. It is an automatic gearbox as opposed to a manual one. |

| 533855 | 2007-03-18 00:53:00 | It's neither a gearbox nor a transmission now, it's junk . ;) Yea its an auto . If he took it (or towed it) and got someone else do the job, would the original group be responsible for the payment or would he have to fork out on his own . He did get 3 quotes before he put it in as the all said the same . It was just they were crap at the job . |

| 533856 | 2007-03-18 01:29:00 | depends on how much damage they have done to it. if its no more damaged than when it went in he could simply take it elsewhere and they can't charge him for anywork. however if its even more damaged then if he takes it elsewhere he will have a bigger repair bill and a fight to recover that from the orginal workshop. it may pay to give them a chance to rebuilt it completely or at least replace the entire gearbox. |

| 533857 | 2007-03-18 02:01:00 | Yea they did break more stuff, at first it was an issues with the transmission which needed 2 plates? (Im pretending I know what im talking about), which were put in wrong way around, which in turn while they were testing the car completely gutted the gears. I feel a massive drama brewing. What should have been a fairly simple job (according to all the quotes) has turned into a pain in the ass. |

Possibly their inspection process might help someone who isn't an expert? Don't suppose it was insured? If so, the company might help with advice. |

| 533860 | 2007-03-18 07:28:00 | What type of car . . . engine size . . . transmission type? I cannot fathom any reason in the world that a shop would open an automatic transmission if they had no idea of what to expect or any idea on how to fix it . Are you sure this isn't a work-continuation program for drug addicts or something? Are they liable . . bet your bippy they are! Are you gonna win? You should . Only doctors get to bury their mistakes: mechanic's problems return on tow trucks . Sounds like this shop just married your car . |
