| 533678 | 2007-03-16 20:56:00 | Good morning fellow PF1'ers ;) My 6 month old Nokia 6155 phone with camera, to-do, colour lcd display is now for the parts bin. I was preparing my bike for the commute home and the bag it was in, slipped off the seat and onto the concrete. Oh b***er I thought :( Now the phone still works, except for the LCD display, which makes it pretty useless. Luckily I still have my previous phone which needed a new battery and the battery fits both phones so I am up and running again with no expense. I am curious what people think. Should a phone be durable enough to withstand a reasonable "drop" (not from 10 stories on concrete of course), but a drop from say 2 feet onto a hard surface. When I went in Telecom to see what it would cost to get it looked at, the girl said "Oh I have the same phone and I have dropped it a number of times". I do not own an iPod and it seems that they are somewhat fragile. Should manufacturers consider this in the design process or is it all features and looks. |

Why do you not demand the council install a soft patch where you are going to bounce test your appliances? ;) ;) | R2x1 (4628)

I've dropped my Sony Ericsson K700 from about 1.5m onto concert and it only suffered a minor dent in the corner of impact. My iPod nano has suffered a similar fate on two occasions when it hit a tiled floor from around 1m. It also continues to work perfectly. Maybe I have been lucky, but in my experience most electronic goods seem to last quite well considering the way they get bashed around everyday. | maccrazy (6741)

| 533684 | 2007-03-16 23:58:00 | Most durable phone I ever owned was a Motorola . I can't remember the model number, but it was a turquoise color on Vodafone prepay and it was $99 . Was the cheapest WAP phone at that time . To my dismay WAP was / is a completley useless protocol, but never the less the phone was great . Dropped it numerous times; it was shaped in such a way that it regularly fell out of my pocket on to concrete many times but it only ever came out with minor scratches . The scratches were hardly noticed though, as the case was the same color all the way through the plastic, not just a painted surface . But come to think of it, if all mobile phones were made like this little beastie, people would have less desire to upgrade, and sales of new phones would surely suffer . Perhaps one reason why mobile phones are not so rugged as they used to be? |

Thats what you get for getting fancy feature filled phones.:xmouth: Snap, my reliable backup is the 2280. When I got my new one (which I got on a deal anyway), they said at Telecom that the 2280 had proven itself as pretty hard wearing. Actually I hadn't used the 2280 for 6 months and it fired up fine, time and date still correct. Actually the busted one is better ergonomically (bigger keys) but alas, if it can't take the knocks, then I'm not going to get a new one. Maybe they should have crumple zones on mobiles :D |

| 533687 | 2007-03-17 01:32:00 | I seem to remember my shiny new 400 series Tektronics portable oscilloscope was warranted to withstand a drop from 3 feet onto EACH edge, corner and flat surface. I am not sure if that was ok, I never tested it. It did suffer from a considerable lack of brightness by the 7th. year. (Cellphones never gave trouble at all then. ;) ) That was way back when Hewlett-Packard had a name for making very well regarded test equipment. Now you don't need a crane, or even a truck, to move a computer, HP have a slightly different image and we get daylight saving too. |
