| 533030 | 2007-03-16 15:21:00 | As one of the users in the Big Bell Break Up a few decades ago, I can tell you it was nasty . . . nasty and the service went completely in the toilet . What had been the best phone service in the world became something we had seen in movies of France or Italy where a dial tone was there 30% of the time, usually during daylight hours and then there were dead dialing areas . We couldn't even dial across the street without getting long distance fees . It's steeped down a lot . . . we are almost back to the service the way it was when Ma Bell ran it with a big stick . . . . but rumors of THIS bust up happening again bring shivers down the back of most citizens . This country is too big to fiddle with the communications system . . . I most of the time wish I was using the monopoly again . Rates were very low . . even without "competition" and service was fantastic . . . they fixed everything, even IN the house for you for free . Now, we pay for anything past the breakout box unless we buy "insurance" to keep anything unfortunate from happening to us in the walls, if you get my picture . We have to buy phones, jacks, wiring and hardware from independent third party manufacturers like BellSouth or Wester Electric or Sony or Ericssen which are NOT phone companies . Just an example: The directories and books we get from the Baby Bells . . . (and I get seven of them . . all for the same area), are all so diverse and different that one cannot find anything one needs in the way of a phone number without cross-referencing at least three of them to get a general consensus or plurality vote on the real number . It also cost us to NOT have our number in the book, We have to pay for vetting! I, fortunately purchase a Verizon package deal that costs very little because the Bigger Bells LIKE you to throw in with them in a total type way, and they grant tremendous discounts for it . There are some shortages though . When there's a problem with the system, there is a lot of buck-passing as to who is responsible . . there are a lot of little subcontractors who run the logistics, and communication between them is suspect to say the least . The main company may own the underground wires, but doesn't maintain them . They may own the poles, but they are serviced by a different company altogether . No . . I liked the monopolies . . . at least you knew where you stood with them . Let's see how bollixed up this VOIP matter becomes . . . . compatibility, or lack of it comes to mind . The again, all this flies into a cocked hat if they decide to use Vista as their opsys! |
