532952 2007-03-15 07:06:00 As another idea - what about using Google text ads on PressF1? I don't know about others, but I find them much less intrusive (i.e. I don't mind them at all really) and am far more likely to click on them, as they're usually more relevant than untargeted banners. They also don't slow down page loads much - brilliant when loading a dozen threads in tabs all at once. They also can't cause problems with the Linux people - being of a textual nature, they'll display in just about anything. The dial-up users will love you, and I wouldn't be surprised if the text ads generated more revenue either. Erayd (23)
532953 2007-03-15 07:14:00 we could blame it on the whole fairfax thing, aint it since they took over Press F1 they gone ad crazy?

i dont mind ads but if they jump at u, flashing and all that, taking over the page when you're trying to read something (stuff does that...!!!) it puts me off..

I used to read stuff.co.nz but since their ads have been so invading, just opening up and what not, i've moved to nzherald. and so far so good!

i know ads make the company money....but surely they'd rather keep the customers than ads?...

532957 2007-03-15 10:05:00 I didn't bother to block ads until the nasty purple squares attacked me. Done properly, advertising can be valuable both to the advertiser and viewer. Pretty much the only ads I ever find which manage this are text based adverts such as Google's system. Even without the ad blocker, I simply never noticed anything else until my view of this site's valuable content was physically obstructed.

May I suggest that a column of text ads down the right side would probably be more effective than all the sparkle you can fit. This is definitely the case for my own browsing - I only ever click a picture ad by mistake and then tend to use a flick of the wrist to gesture "begone" to the resulting page.

Even running a blocker I still see the "unique" advertising (the subscription ads and the sponsored links at the bottom) that is actually directed and relevant. It's the mass market trash ads that the filters catch.

532958 2007-03-17 04:09:00 Could a mod please add an extra option to the poll?

"Yes, But I block all ads"

Thanks in advance (if its done)

and add "i wouldn't know, i block all ads"

At least we don't have ads between posts like on a lot of forums.
It always annoys me when one has to scroll thru half a page of ads to read the next post in a thread.

even worse are the ones where an ad pops up in the middle of your screen and the only way to escape it is to refresh.

i've lost count of the number of machines i've used now where i've done the owner a favour and installed firefox and adblock.
