533376 2007-03-19 07:46:00 Oh, and not sure about the DVI stuff. The monitor has "15-pin mini D-sub and DVI-D"

My graphics card: www.msi.com.tw (pretty sure it's this)

Will this be compatable? I know, I know, people say they can't see a differnce between vga and dvi, but I just want dvi ok?

** Ok, it looks like from the picture of my graphics card, and the examples on wikipedia, that my card has DVI-I, which is apparantly digital and analogue, so it should be sweet right? DVI-D into DVI-I would work perfectly I assume.

No idea what D-sub is, anyone care to explain that?

Hey Jo, D-sub is also known as the vga port/plug. It is what has been in use for years and years. Your CRT monitors use D-sub.
It is the blue port on the graphics card.

Great effort going for a better monitor mejobloggs, honestly, you will not regret it!..

533379 2007-03-20 04:39:00 Yeah, quite excited actually. Just got the rest of the parts tonight. No idea how to assemble a computer, but meh. I will probably end up wrecking some parts, knowing me.

Perhaps I should read some tutorials or something beforehand...

Toms Hardware used to have a good 'straightforward' guide with pictures ;)

The hardest thing for me has always been connecting the case wires to the motherboard.... big fingers, small holes :annoyed:

533381 2007-03-20 21:42:00 I'm having trouble pulling cables off the old pc. They are stuck on so hard, and things start bending quite badly when I yank away at them.

Oooh, pictures at tomshardware, that will be helpful, thanks!

533382 2007-03-20 23:00:00 Ok, I think I'm going for the "Viewsonic VX2025wm Black 20" Widescreen 16:10 1680x1050 8ms DVI LCD Monitor" for about $600.

From reviews it seems it has very nice colour quality, and it's not too expensive.

Only thing is, that is one heck of a resolution. These are my system specs:

Athlon xp 2000
768mb ram
Geforce 4 Ti 4200

Will that be able to handle games even on minumum specs at that resolution? Or should I be upgrading to a 7300GT?

That video card is really really going to struggle to play games on that screen at its native resolution. Upgrading the video card is a waste of time, the rest of the PC will still be a bottleneck, and the 7300GT isn't that great anyway. Best bet is to start saving and get a whole new PC. A friend of mine just upgraded his 9600XT because it was struggling with modern games @ 1024x768!

533383 2007-03-20 23:54:00 Yeah ok, I will flag games then. Except for maybe freeciv and bzflag. Should be able to play those. mejobloggs (264)
533384 2007-03-22 22:14:00 So come on Joe, what did you get? :nerd: Shortcircuit (1666)
533385 2007-03-22 23:25:00 Nothing yet, just finished building the pc last night.

Plus I have just found a Samsung 215TW with $250 off. That is seriously tempting.

Maybe I should just buy both :annoyed: Stupid decisions.

Looks like my graphics card doesn't have DVI after all. It has 2 vga connecters.

Which is odd, because all the MSI 4200's seemed to have DVI. I can't find any there without it, yet mine doesn't have it.

Maybe I was too tired when I looked, will check it again tonight.

Man, can't believe such a great screen is going to be wasted on this puny computer. Going to work hard now to save up for another :)

End of this year hopefully.
