| 734384 | 2009-01-03 04:03:00 | Terminal services is useful if you need to run any specialist software, like production / financial management from remote locations, or home. Many of them do not work to well with slow VPN connections. Exchange is a bit of an over kill, unless they wont shared calendars and task management. For all the evils that exchange is, it is very good at collaboration from within the user familiar Office apps. Also you have the Blackberry factor and other windows mobile device factor. Also sharepoint integration is a big plus for exchange, even for a small bussiness. Exchange is a very expensive option!! as I found quoting for work and I looked at other less expensive and more open solutions, but they all fell short with the familiar Office platform integration and required jumping through hoops to work well with mobile devices. For basic email there are plenty of free solutions, based on Linux or Windows, but many small to medium businesses do not wont to hire a team of IT experts to support a Linux based platform, or use a windows package that is not "main stream" as support is hard to find. At lest with exchange many "IT shops" can support it and you have no problems finding support for it. My .001c worth. |
