534175 2007-03-19 13:03:00 Metla, whatever that was you fished out of your nostril, it appears to post and needs to be compost urgently. It must be a relief to have it out but PLEASE bury it. Thanks. (Is there a bounty on those things still?) R2x1 (4628)
534176 2007-03-19 17:03:00 No problem here on dialup, loads in seconds with Mac Safari browser.
I don't block anything, I let the page display as it was designed to.
I think some of you people are so paranoid about blocking everything you can by using all sorts of programs and other tricks that you are actually causing complications on your computer and slowing it down and probably causing some web sites to not load at all.

Mind you I don't have the added complication of running firewalls, antivirus, and spyware programs and the like which can also cause compatibility problems with blocking programs that might be installed.

Ain't buying that totally...

I call long distance, have my firewalls (one physical, one software), Spybot, AdAware, SpywareBlaster and AVG Free...and no problems 99% of the time.

I am gonna drop AdAware though, as I see no practical purpose in it. It has all the same entries as my host files anyway. It's not running in the other puters on my net and they run fine without it so far.

Firefox seems to be OK with F1...and I feel a lot better with it than with IE in any form.

Perhaps..just PERHAPS those with problems have some hidden malware in the works?

I DO have ABP running with XP-Pro on this puter, and the Dell on Mepis doesn't..they both seem fine and as fast as can be expected on DSL to Upsidedown Land....

So...I seems to me any problems would have to be with individual systems with individual infections or slow processors...or sumpthin.

534178 2007-03-20 06:24:00 As an experiment can someone who gets this "lag" install Proximiton, let it block all the fluff content and then report back if the forum is now snappy?

Remember that promitron is tiny, makes no registry entires, doesn't need installing in the traditional windows fashion and alters nothing on your PC, plus its default setup should be more then enough for the test .

Anyone?

Foxy, Im looking directly at you .

Now Im winking

Now Ive tilted my head slightly foward, Rubbing my chin in a manly fashion .

Whoops, Splipped, finger right up the nostril, But hey, whats this, and there, Just a little futher up . . . . . . . .

Hmmm . . . I know you Mets, you're as cunning as a rat and this definitely smells like a trap . Isn't it . Go on, 'fess up, you're out to get me, aren't you? :stare:

OK then, I fished Proxomitron (note the spelling please - I couldn't find the darn file after using your version in the search box  ) out of my Downloads folder where it has been residing for the past two or three years and finally gave it a twirl .

The Results:
Pity I didn't know years ago that you just run it without needing to install it . I wouldn't have fluffed around for long inventing excuses not to try it if I had known that . :dogeye:

Anyways, at first I got all excited last night when PF1 seemed to load noticeably faster than using my Hosts file but now things are no different to before . Sometimes the pages load nice and snappy then other times they drag their feet . This is using the default out-of-the-box settings by the way . I have since discovered a myriad of configuration options that could possibly help, once I learnt how to drive the thing .

Verdict:
It's a great little app for those who don't use a Hosts file and with a bit of tweaking one could probably do a lot with it . However, being a lazy little cow, reading manuals is not high on my list of favourite things to do so I'm not going to get the best use out of it until I do just that . For me it is no better and no worse than using my Hosts file and the latter is just one click away from disabling when I want to see the adverts, unlike "undoing" the settings in Opera for Proxomitron .

You are not allowed to comment as you do not use our lame broadband.
And no I have not and have never had malware of any form on my PC.
Malware would cause problems with other sites too anyway.

As for the pinging its because of Pressf1s firewall so I have been told.

So maybe thats the problem for all of it. Blocking or not blocking makes no difference to me.

534180 2007-03-20 08:43:00 At around 6:00pm it was slower than dialup, other sites were alright. Right now at 7:43pm it is alright.

534182 2007-03-21 01:55:00 Chaps has this slowdown been more noticable since we shifted premises? (mid Feb). We've been having issues with our net connection but hadn't tought it was effecting incoming traffic. Biggles (121)

Here on Xtra (Go Large), I cant say I have noticed any slow down in PressF1, but if there was any slow down I blame it on Go Large anyhow :p
