532934 2007-03-14 23:10:00 Please...use more advertisements...I love them!

They are the capitalist's way!

An open market is a happy market!

[I don't see them anyway!]

532935 2007-03-14 23:28:00 I must point out that PressF1 and indeed all our websites are part of a commercial entity, one that employs not one or two guys in their mother's garage, but a decent number of peope at desks producing several magazines/newspapers and associated websites.

Can I point out that 99.999999 percent of the content on Pressf1 is user generated, and I have no doubt that this forum gets more hits then any of the real sites, Hence the rampant advertising and feeder threads back to the main site.

And surely any revenue from this site is a tiny amount in the grand scheme of things, If your using it to keep the publishing company above water then your in a bit of trouble....

I need a smilie of someone stirring a pot.:help:

532936 2007-03-14 23:50:00 From my viewpoint (Famously unbiased and invariably correct) I wouldn't say "expect advertising"; more like "resign yourself to advertising".
Fairlyfacksed in their turn should not be entirely astonished if those able to block ads do just that. It is a fair while since I saw the entire ad slather, but I do not think that "pretty conservative" was the first impression to churn the fading neurons. "Religious effluent" might have been closer. Only part of my reverence was for the slowness of IE, your guess as to the main inspiration should be kept to the privacy of your own home.
I realise the main motive for the site like the magazine is to prop up the Aus economy, but don't expect the sheep to approve being shorn while the weather is cool. Have a good weekend. ;)

532937 2007-03-15 00:04:00 Generally I have no problems with the ads on the site (although I would say that most of the benefit to Fairfax from this site is of a non-financial nature), provided that said ads don't interfere with my browsing. The PressF1 ads do.

Case in point is that damn 'peel me' ad - I unblocked the ads to see what I was missing, and was immediately harrassed by giant purble blobs on every page I went to. Needless to say, I won't be turning off ad-blocking again for a while.

I would also like to point out the very real (non ad-related) benefits that Fairfax gains from this site:

* Traffic to other Fairfax sites

* A higher search engine ranking for your main sites

* An additional lure to keep your magazine readership hooked in, and attract new readers

* Metla

* A large base of people to respond to your polls (I would guess that most respondents are PressF1 readers)

* A convenient and 'in-house' solution for those who have trouble following your magazine tutorials

For the cost of a server and a net connection, I'd say that was well worth it.

532938 2007-03-15 00:33:00 You know, I've written and discarded 3 replies now, because they all start off calm and end up at a place where I'll get called into someone's office and told not to go near a keyboard again. So I guess I'll leave it. Biggles (121)
532939 2007-03-15 00:49:00 My computer has just sent a nice soothing flat white to yours, Bruce.

Next a nice walk in the park nearby?
And deep breaths..?
None of this is worth risking high blood pressure.

532940 2007-03-15 00:51:00 Aww heck ;) Well done in the restraint dept., saves you getting put in restraints :D.
And as for not trusting anyone, watch out for young Nick, all those Kruschevs are sneaky sods.
Rally driver's overalls resist flames BTW. A fair bit of heat gets in though. Time to kick the water cooler?

532941 2007-03-15 01:21:00 If this was some Kosy Kommunisto Gulag out the back of Siberia where money didn't matter I'd be screaming that I was being subjected to 'cruel and unusual punishment', but it's not, it's what some refer to as the 'real world' and Fairfax et al are here to make a buck... it's the bottom line. If they choose to do that with advertising I suggest you all 'suck it up'.

I am grateful that Bruce and his happy cohorts are able and willing to keep PF1 afloat, I am more grateful that I am able to block the advertising

Group hug for Bruce as he appears to be getting conflicted and congested :D
