734037 2009-01-03 19:07:00 what about upgradeing a toshiba satellite a100 is it worth it? and can i it only has 198mb of ram in it atm and is incredibly slow. would this improve speeds?

Yes, you will get a big improvement in speed by adding more RAM. Win XP will run on 128 or 256 Mb of RAM but it will be slow. Use at least 512 Mb, but more than 1 Gb will probably not show any improvement. My wife's old laptop originally came with 128 Mb of RAM and adding another stick of 128 did little to improve performance, but when I replaced one of the 128's with a stick of 512 Mb, bringing the total to 640), it was a 'new' pc - amazingly fast for an old laptop (no intense graphics demands, just the normal things like email and word processing).

BTW, just adding more RAM will not necessarily improve speed if the system is not cleaned of junk files and hasn't had certain 'speed tweaks' (googling will show you pages with a lot of tweaks to do).

734038 2009-01-06 07:05:00 OK, here is another question:

This laptop is supposed to take PC4200 (533MHz) ram. I was wondering if it can take faster ram say the PC5300 (667 MHz) ram? The reason I ask is that the latter appears to be cheaper (at least everywhere I've been looking using Pricespy). Or will the ram only run at the specified speed?

734039 2009-01-06 07:13:00 No it will only run at 533 as that's the FSB speed (front side bus) gary67 (56)
734040 2009-01-06 19:37:00 No it will only run at 533 as that's the FSB speed (front side bus)

So you're saying if I buy 667 MHz ram it will work at the 533 MHz speed since its governed by the FSB? So in effect I'll be under-running the ram? I just don't want to get it and it not work!

734041 2009-01-06 19:39:00 I think from memory they have a different pin configuration too but not sure about that gary67 (56)
734042 2009-01-06 19:43:00 Ok thanks for that Gary. Sounds too risky, I'll just get the PC4200 ram. pico (4752)
734043 2009-01-06 20:30:00 try this (www.crucial.com).

it scans your system and tells you exactly what type of ram , speed of ram etc, all you need to know.

neat little program
I tried and it said this (www.gigabyte.com.tw) is my motherboard but
after looking on a website a bit, i found it said that my motherboard uses DDR2
800 memory but it uses DDR2 5**(not sure of exact no.). it also couldn't idetify my RAM which was a simply 2 sticks of kingston 521MB Dual channel DDR 2 5** RAM. and on the page i gave me, it said my computer could support 10GB of RAM but on the site of the mother board above, it says 12GB
