534274 2007-03-19 05:13:00 What TV moron suggested that method? Most spyware "keyloggers" don't just record keystrokes, they snoop to a deeper level than that.
Like taking screenshots as well.

Its simple, never use anyones PC to access stuff like that at all, use only your own.

I once had occasion to do that at Legend - one of my suppliers, the idiot Eftpos wouldn't accept my payment, some ridiculous limit the banks impose, and I either had to drive all the way back home and do it from home or use their PC to do it online.

3 guesses what I chose.

I don't care who it is, my best friend even, in fact I did once at my best friends but I ran all my spyware scan apps on the thing first, then changed my password again from paranoia later on my PC.

534275 2007-03-19 06:52:00 What you need to use in internet cafes is a second tare (two-factor) security device. It is a dongle or similar item that generates a unique code every 8-12 minutes. The codes are syncronised with the codes generated for your account.

Even if the bad and evil people get your account id, password and code the code is unsuable as a different code is required at the next login.

Read up on it at:
www.consumer.org.nz

All banks should be using them. But they arn't.

I used to remove about 2 keyloggers a week from my PC. All loaded via third party scripts/ads on popular sites my kids use (e.g pokemon crater) so no PC is really safe. Try looking up phishing and pharming on the net. No one is safe no mater how good your PC security is, which is why you really need two-factor security.

Read your bank's terms and conditions - some of them state you are responsible for the money lost if you use an unsecure computer (yet they tout that you can access you money all over the world at i-net cafes).

Write to your bank, I did. I got back a letter that among other things says that at the moment no one has been held responsible for loss from internet banking. Nice but its still damned inconvenient to lose all your money while your overseas.

BTW Laura I dumped PSIS - they went and stuck the fees up - well unless you have tons of money in the account .
So I'm back to ASB who don't care so long as I don't do anything over the counter . Total fees per month = $0 . 00

534278 2007-03-19 12:03:00 Keep your things in a Truecrypt hidden container within a Truecrypt container:
http://www.truecrypt.org
Use a different password for your Truecrypt containers. Get used to having a password like:
Meatball24
Type it in like:
b...a...l...l...(click at the beginning of the word)...M...E...A...T...(click at the end of the password)...2...4
You get the same password in the end, just its not quite as useful if somebody goes and uses a keylogger. Random things like that (for the truely paranoid) help :)

Ive tried playing with a lot of different keyloggers etc myself, setting them up, playing with them, using them... None has been able to monitor me using the built-in Windows On-screen Keyboard yet :-/

That can happen on any PC not just at internet cafe's.
As it is a 'man-in-the-middle' type of attack there doesn't need to be any security breach on the PC you are using.

Darn it, just when I was getting over my last bout of paranoia . Still two-factor is a bit safer than just account id and password (shoulder surfing is out) .

BTW I'm just about to dump the PSIS too, cost me $10 last month in fees . I've got a no fees ASB account and a Westpac no fees as well (seems I owe them so much money they forgone the fees .

534281 2007-03-20 06:50:00 The worst part is, these keyloggers are damn easy to make. Even innocent software like Game-Maker. Hell, I made one as a P.O.F for my m8s Cornot (10386)
