If so that may be some priority if you need to travel light.
The Wifi unit maybe its builtin or shove in that card accessory.

Some PDAs have a lot of built in memory, but the problem Winston would face is communication with an internet cafe PC. That is where the accessory card like an SD card could be useful.

Some PDAs have WIFI but not all of them, but he could certainly choose one that does (the Treo for example doesn't, but some Palm models do). Would all internet cafes in the kind of place Winston is likely to be going to have WIFI?

534010 2007-03-20 04:04:00 Now, if you have a Palm, you can just get software that turns it into a USB drive or atleast all the Palm ones. I have a IPAQ 6365 and it has a attachable keyboard and built-in Wireless and bluetooth and IRdA.

Or simply get one of the new UMPC's. Could get expensive but they look so sweet are are quite fast and functional as well.

Nice machine, but not far off price of a laptop..
Certainly if you can get for 475 that would be good.

534012 2007-03-20 09:30:00 Another thought - take a PDA with you and a small card reader. Compose your emails on the PDA, save the notes to the PDA's removable card (in the case of a Palm device/Treo, it is an SD card). When you get to an internet cafe, plug the USB card reader into their PC, insert the SD, then read/copy/paste your notes. Probably safer and simpler than the infrared idea.

Here is an example - costs are minimal ($22.07 inc GST):

Now that is good thinking John. As it happens I have an unused Treo 600 (pitiful phone range so it has just sat on a shelf in my office). I might play around with it. I suppose my travel philosophy comes into play here. Travel light, with minimal valuable objects. Keep what technology you have discreet. Small portable stuff. Internet cafes in the third world vary widely. Some have '98 others XP. Often users couldn't download to pcs (fair enough) so the manager did this which meant waiting, handing over a precious camera or SD card - which they lost the first time I did this!!! Turned up after 20 minutes. Rooms are crowded, the net goes down, power goes out, it can be a lot of fun but also an uncertain experience. Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. A foldup keyboard would be the icing on the cake, plus a card reader which one of my companions had with him in India but I hadn't thought about how useful it could be.

534013 2007-03-20 10:13:00 Winston, I think the foldable Universal keyboard will work with a Treo, and they are about $140. (Later: I tried the Targus website, and their compatibility chart says the keyboard will work with the Handspring Treo 600 - you may want to check it at www.targus.com )

The only difficulty is that you need good eyeglasses or good eyesight to see the

534014 2007-03-20 10:43:00 Ta John, went to the Targus site from your earlier link and found the Treo. I'll fiddle around with the Treo and see how useful it is. Maybe I should forget about IT and just scratch my ramblings on A4 paper. The page(s) can then be scanned and emailed from a cybercafe at leisure. Or faxed. Hardly elegant but simple. Years ago I was in Oaxaca in Mexico and our VW Kombi van was burgled. I lost an 8 month diary and this experience put me off recording travel except in letters. The advent of the net and email is wonderful. Winston001 (3612)
