533356 2007-03-16 03:16:00 I asked playtech about the quality between the AOC and the Samsung. Here is the reply:

--------------
Both are good quality monitors, Samsung has the advantage of a better base (which allows swivel, tilt, potrait view, height adjustment), but the overall quality and performance of the panels will be very similar if not the same.

So if your priority is maximise screen size with minimum cost, then AOC will be a better choice, if your priority is to maximise the looks and functionality of the LCD, then the Samsung will be better. Cheers.
-------

It's just that, as I have said, the AOC 193S seems too cheap for it's specs, and hardly appears on google even. No reviews.

I don't want to buy it, and find it has shocking colour reproduction or something.

Now that I think about it, I do web design as well, so I probably should be looking at a higher quality screen as people suggest (for good colour representation). Just... no idea what one!

Reviews always seem to conflict with each other. Monitor A rocks!... Never buy Monitor A, it's terrible! Like that :(

533357 2007-03-16 03:28:00 Mejoebloggs... sounds like you're a bit too much like me.

I'm thinking you will buy the el cheapo AOC and regret it.... then go out and buy a decent one :D

The bit from the computer guy is bollocks... there is no comparison between the quality of the screen/reproduction in the AOC my friend had and my Samsung. Don't forget that Samsung are the actual company who produce the lcd panels, so they should know what they are doing when they make a monitor!

Heh, so true.

Actually, I should check if I can return a monitor. Buy the AOC, and if it turns out I don't like it, return it and get the Samsung.

That way I will be more happy with the samsung, knowing I havn't wasted the extra money

Sounds like a plan to me. I tried doing it with the other half... no go, something about non-performance not being a valid reason for an exchange :stare:

533360 2007-03-16 06:29:00 Is it possible that a monitor that has no problems in use will not get many hits by google. One that is being toasted by 2 out of 5 users will be getting googles bots in a frenzy.
I am unable to understand why use on gaming and work call for different monitor quality. Do you have an extra pair of eyes stashed away in reserve?
I paid a stupid price for my monitor 4 years ago (Imperial years, not metric) and have never regretted it once the initial wallet pain wore off. (I suspect I could buy 3 or 4 of the LCD monitors for the $$ I lashed out, and this one would still give a better picture than any of them. I find that thought cheers me up on cold nights ;) )

533361 2007-03-16 07:14:00 Cheap cheap cheap.....why do people persist in buying inferior products.

1) It is a given that any monitor purchase will out live any pc upgrade.
2) The monitor is the window of your pc, you use it more than any other part of your computer.
3) The more expensive monitors are just that for good reason.
4) Native resolution of 1280*1024 is too small for 17" monitors, get at least a 19"
5) You will never regret paying more for a better monitor, trust me.

Do you want me to go on?
Quite agree. How much do people end up spending on glasses($600-$700) and yet won't buy a decent monitor which the whole family will be using.

533362 2007-03-16 11:28:00 I've got the Samsung 940BW - nice screen. Recommended. I have bought two others for friends and they are happy too. Tukapa (62)
533363 2007-03-16 15:04:00 Cool, thanks for that Tukapa.

Just one thing, I have heard that red looks more like cherry or something. Does red look fine to you?

533364 2007-03-16 17:30:00 My belief when buying anything. Avoid the cheapies.I agree that sometimes you will get a bargain, but generaly you get what you pay for.
Ignore magazine reviews. Some mags have to please their advertisers.

And (get ready to duck) be very wary of what you read in forums. Most people give good advice, but a lot are basing their opinions on reading advertisements. That is they are telling you how good something is based on ads.

For the record. I have a Viewsonic 19" LCD. Over a year old and still can't find anything to complain about.

533365 2007-03-16 17:52:00 I use a Philips 190B 19".

Check on dead pixel warranty is my advice.

Also check if the LCD has speakers. Useful for the times I take my PC elsewhere and don't want to take a subwoofer and 5 speakers.
