734458 2009-01-02 12:58:00 ubuntu/kubuntu are Linux based operating systems which I have never used.
CCleaner is a utility that clears junk files from your HD and also cleans the registry, to keep your computer fast and stable. CCleaner is effective and trustworthy, I have been using it for years without a problem.

734459 2009-01-02 19:36:00 Spybot fixes/removes malware, Ccleaner IS NOT an anti-spyware program

Thats the main diff

734460 2009-01-02 19:45:00 As said above ccleaner is a cleaning tool only, whereas Ubuntu/kubuntu are linux operating systems, I do use ubuntu mainly as a live CD when I want to get data off a failed windows hdd, although I have switched to puppy linux because it is much smaller and faster gary67 (56)
734461 2009-01-02 20:11:00 Whats up with theese programes why do i hear about them so much? i want to find out more about ubuntu/kubuntu and there capacitys. As mentioned, Ubuntu and Kubuntu are Linux operating systems (a.k.a distros) - they are not "programs", the same way XP and Vista are not programs. There are 100s of Linux distros available. Fedora, Debian, SuSE and Mepis are other well known distros. Distro Watch (http://distrowatch.com/) has a full list of them.

What is Linux? (www.linux.org)

Basically Ubuntu and Kubuntu are the same under the hood, their difference is the graphical desktop style. Ubuntu uses Gnome as the desktop environment and Kubuntu uses KDE. Both have a different look/style, so some people prefer Gnome while others prefer KDE.

Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com)

Kubuntu (www.kubuntu.org)

Some distros can be run purely from a CD (live CDs) and you don't have to install anything to use them. They will be slower to use and you cannot install additional programs. Most live CDs will also give you the choice of installing to the hard drive.

You normally need to have a free partition or hard drive available if you wish to install Linux.

Both Ubuntu and Kubuntu have another option of installation, whereby you can install Linux in a folder under Windows rather than on a separate drive or partition. This is a very good way of having a proper look at Linux without having to partition and it is easily uninstalled if you want to remove it. This installer is called Wubi and allows Ubuntu/Kubuntu to be installed under Windows.

If you wanted to have a decent look at Linux, then using Wubi with either Ubuntu or Kubuntu would be the way to go. :)

734462 2009-01-03 04:35:00 So is it reccomended? and whats better kde or gnome?. and above all what does linux have or do that windows can't?

P.S it says on there website that they can send a free cd for usage usually with 6-10 working days.... can we get it?

734463 2009-01-03 04:41:00 Linux is free, you can download it then burn it (its probably in ISO format)

Whereas Windows isnt free.

Most of Linux programs are free, / open source, whereas Windows programs arent (well some are, not all)

And its completely different to windows. Its similar to DOS for some things

It can be tricky to learn, it'll take time, if you decide to use it as your main OS

In the last 6months Ive used puppylinux DOZENS of times.Infact I even run it on a wierd laptop that has no HDD in it,as an mp3 player.

ZapperBoy10647:
It depends what your goal is. If you just want email and web, then (k)ubuntu will do what you want as easily as XP does. However if you want to do other things, youl need to learn about package management (which is actually easy)etc.

I dualboot (X)ubuntu and XP,and alot of people do this thesedays. The installer should give you the option when you install,to configure partitions and the bootloader.

734465 2009-01-03 09:45:00 So is it reccomended? and whats better kde or gnome?. and above all what does linux have or do that windows can't?I would only recommend Linux if you wanted to see something different to Windows and you are prepared for that difference. Linux is not Windows and it does many things differently. If you want Linux to be a copy of, or behave like Windows, then just stick to Windows.

KDE vs Gnome is a personal choice. KDE tends to have a more extensive menus (the "start" menu) whereas Gnome is more minimalist in this area. KDE allows you to change in detail many of its appearance options, while Gnome tends to give you general options. I prefer KDE because I like having choices. For others, this is just clutter. Have a look at some screenshots of both to give you an idea of the differences.

Linux is great for everyday computer usage, for example emailing, browsing the net, using OpenOffice and playing with graphics. Because Linux is open sourced and follows the GPL (www.linux.org), many distros will not include software that is propriety, for example many of the multimedia features such as MP3 codec support. However, most will give you instructions on how to install these applications yourself.

Gaming is not a big area for Linux as you need to use an emulator such as WINE or the commercially available Cedega application to run Window games.

On the upside, you don't need any antivirus/antimalware applications as Linux is immune to these (baring the very rare Linux viruses that tend to target servers).

P.S it says on there website that they can send a free cd for usage usually with 6-10 working days.... can we get it?Yes. Don't forget many PC mags often include a Linux distro on their DVD, so have a look at some.
