2009-01-02 03:41:00 | Looking into getting into Skype and getting rid of the phone line, Does anyone have this already, what are the pro's and cons of this? Would we just need to get a naked DSL package (currently on Ihug/voda) would the current router we have a Dlink DSL 502T handle Voip? Is NZ broadband fast enough to handle it? What the data usage like. Who does naked DSL? Really looking for some subjective answers please :thanks

2009-01-02 06:32:00 | Looking into getting into Skype and getting rid of the phone line, Does anyone have this already I deal a lot in VoIP -- Dont know anybody who's been game enough to go cold-turkey with Skype, but know a lot who use it along-side a SIP VoIP Solution :) what are the pro's and cons of this? Pro's = Cheaper, easier if you shift premises, number can be with you regardless of your physical location (Like if you go on holiday and want it to be on the computer in the hotel room) Would we just need to get a naked DSL package (currently on Ihug/voda) Yes, and depending on where you are, check who's got their own equipment in the local exchange -- quality varies a lot. Where are you physically located? E.g. Central Auckland CBD? Takapuna? (We dont want your exact street addy) would the current router we have a Dlink DSL 502T handle Voip? It might handle Skype, but it wont be very reliable ... Try getting something like a nice shiny Linksys one. Talk to your ISP, they may give you an upgrade for free. IIRC the buzzword is "Triple Play", and they'll give you some semi-decent router :) Just google for "DSL-502T" and the first result is a Geekzone.co.nz thread on how rubbish they are Is NZ broadband fast enough to handle it? When you get Naked DSL, you'll get full speed upload & download. Yes, its fast enough What the data usage like. It uses anywhere from 15-40MB an hour (Approx), thats inclusive of both up & download Who does naked DSL? +1 vote for Orcon Also, I'd suggest you check out 2talk.co.nz instead of Skype ... :)

2009-01-02 06:35:00 | Sorry, should have said something like the Linksys AM300 / AG300 does brilliantly, or the Linksys WAG200G if you want to include Wireless support :) | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2009-01-02 07:52:00 | Thanks Chill, you have given me food for thought and time to do some investigating, we are not sure either as to whether it will be ok to cold turkey either. Thanks again

2009-01-02 08:04:00 | If you sign up with 2talk, you can trial their service with a Softphone, ATA or SIP Deskphone without worrying about messing your existing setup. Then, later you can port your current Home Phone number to a SIP number if you do decide to go VoIP :)
