2009-01-04 09:57:00 | I know I've been down this road before but cant remember what I did last time. Duel boot system Vista & XP Pro. Had to reinstall XP, no problems with that. Then rebooted to the Vista disc to reinstate the boot loader to the MBR, no go. Said task couldnt be performed automatically & reverted back to the recovery options screen. At bootup the windows boot manager screen still comes up with the 2 OS's options but only XP works.

2009-01-05 05:35:00 | Still not quite there. I followed the guide & succeeded in creating a second entry for XP which also boots up but the Vista still won't. I can probably remove the second entry ok but it's not really doing the job & I'm a little reluctant to experiment in this area. I don't really want to finish up having to reinstall Vista. Now this is using "Easy BCD 1.7.2" previously it was using "Vista Boot Pro" which will still be installed on the Vista OS. Could that be causing a problem.

2009-01-05 07:59:00 | Having two programs trying to change the setting wont help, the Vista boot pro may be "holding" it closed. Is the OS's on separate drives or 1 drive partitioned into two ? IF its separate drives, disconnect the XP, with only the Vista, boot from the Vista DVD and try to run the startup repair. If Vista Loads uninstall vista boot pro IF they are both on the same HDD - open the Boot.ini in XP --- Right click on My computer/Properties On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Under System Startup, click Edit. This opens the file in Notepad ready for editing. BE VERY CAREFUL--- COPY the contents back here - for gods sake don't alter it, or cut it other wise nothing will boot. Unless someone else can suggest anything I wont be back till tomorrow to look at it. - currently 8.59pm

2009-01-05 09:53:00 | The boot loader looks fairly standard. At least I can access Vista from XP & save the User Docs. Unless someone comes up with a briliant idea I will just reinstall Vista. [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

2009-01-06 02:22:00 | I'm still in trouble here. The 2 OS's are on the same drive which is partitioned. I have reinstalled Vista but the duel boot option dosent come up at boot. In Vista start up & recovery both OS's are listed.

2009-01-06 03:29:00 | Just a further update. With the aid of Easy BCD I have added another entry & now has duel boot. There is now another problem. Boots to XP ok but blue screens with memory dump when attempting Vista.

2009-01-06 05:12:00 | hmmmm -- OK - at what point when opening vista - right at the startup, after desktop loads ? Have you tried opening Vista in safe mode ? Sorry for the delay in getting back to this - its one of those days :waughh: and its only Tuesday - 1st week back 2 stuffed boards,(separate customers) and 1 drive gone "poof" (another customer) :crying AND that was all after lunch :)

2009-01-06 05:33:00 | Just after the green line starts going across the screen. It wood boot in safe mode. May have sorted it though, although maybe only temporarily. Hard drive seemed a bit slow to crank up, so went into XP & did a full scandisc of the Vista partition followed by several runs of defrag. Boots up fine now, both ways. Could be Hard Disc on the way out maybe. I'll return it to the user & see what happens. Thanks for your help.
