735336 2009-01-09 03:20:00 Avast x4

If anyone if usuing AVG ver 8.00 I would suggest that they check if they have the latest updates and if it has actually done any scheduled scans.

On my machine it could hardy ever connect to their server to get their updates and if it started a scan that it could not complete (cos of their corrupt file bug) then the main screen told you that it had done the scan (that is crap and I told them that !)

So now (due to reccs on here, I use Avast)

735337 2009-01-09 05:23:00 BitDefender 2009, is a very buggy release. It never updated, the update server was constantly offline. Scans would pick up 20 or so detections and when you go to deal with them it ends up being the same file picked up 20 times, and overall the program is very unstable, crashing for no reason, etc.

After all of these problems I moved on to Avast! no complaints with this product :)

735338 2009-01-09 05:40:00 Any recommendations which is the best and free anti-virus software that's readily available?

define "best"

do you want the one that has most update's per day?
do you want the one that has least performance impact?
do you want the one with best support?
do you want the one that find the most virussss?

735340 2009-01-10 05:44:00 Thanks very much - for the opinions of everyone here!

Have (amongst other PC's!) a W98 laptop (go Toshiba!) that was starting to struggle with later AVG versions (and my favourite CA Antivirus dropped W98 support some time ago).

Avast installs and works a treat - would not have found it without recommendations here... (also, thanks Avast!).

Thanks, Martnz

735342 2009-03-25 21:14:00 hi there

hate to piggy back on your message but im actually here to find out the same answer as you.

I have xp home (stand alone laptop)
sp3
IE7
and always alot of pc woes ...lol...

I have been reading past editor reviews of products avaliable for free.
Quite contradictary though at times eg, recommends nortons as the best in one article,
tested nortons and failed in another???
I also noticed that the articles are all out dated
so what i would like to know what is the best current (2009) free anti virus product avaliable?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

735343 2009-03-25 21:18:00 Well theres not many that are free, besides Avast Home and AVG, which has more probs (a lot more) than Avast

Quite a few places / sites / mags say Norton IS 2009 is better than its predecessors . Well good for them, it not free tho .

If you want to pay for something try the trial of NOD32

I'm running Avira which is free. When I selected it last year it appeared to be the winner of reviews that I could find, with the exception of being slow to update which is not really an issue is it unless you're on dial-up? So apart from who uses what replies which are pretty irrelevant aren't they (because if most people used nothing would you choose nothing?!!!) what is currently the most effective free AV
